Oversize oil filter
Who's using them?
Any issues? What kind of mileage have you been running? Don't want to start a controversy or flame war. Just a simple question. Nissan has used many sizes in past. The current hand grenade is ok but I can fit my Xterra filter on the Z and Murano. It has all same dimensions but about 1/2" taller. I use WIX xp filters and I noticed that the one for the Xterra has a Silicone anti-drain back valve while the smaller one for the Z has a black, which usually denotes a rubber/nitrile material. I'd prefer the silicone. Both same price. On the WIX site, both filters have same bypass specs except they give a range for the larger at 8-11 psi vs just opening at 8 psi for smaller. Same goes for the Mobil1 filters. M1-108 (short) M1-110 taller. Both same mounting size. Thanks |
I use the medium sized Baldwin filters

The physical size of a filter doesn't matter (as long as it will fit in the space allowed). The main specs to look at are filtering efficiency (the fewer microns, the better), filtering capacity (how much dirt can it hold and still flow through), and bypass pressure.
The more oil you have in the system, the better. A bigger filter is (usually) better. Just remember that you need to add a little extra oil. I usually run the biggest filter that will fit - and meets or exceeds the specs pointed out above - and have had no problems over the 30-40 years that I have done so. Edit: Can't do that with the Challenger; it has a top-mount cartridge. |
