Stage 2 heads + increased rev limit = ???
Came across these yesterday and it got me wondering...
They aren't very expensive...I bet those with a tune and a raised rev limit (along with the usual mods and, from what I've heard, a high-flow oil pump...) could turn the Z into a screamer. Anyone ever seen this done? Think it'd be worth it? How many revs is the bottom end good for without totally screwing reliability? |
I think it was Doran Racing that had crank problems at sustained 8k rpm use on track. Also, VVEL blew up on one guy's Z (Megan370?) with 8k rpm track use. It's not just oiling that fails with higher revs, it's just that oiling fails first. If it's a street car, you might be fine forever. Both guys I'm thinking of had track-only cars.
$2500 for heads, another $600 for cams, $1200 for an oil pump, another $1000 or so for the random odds and ends you'll need - you're pretty close to what TopgunZ will be selling his sc kit for, and that will be more power by far. The cost per dollar for a NA build gets wacky after you get past the usual bolt-ons. |
True true. I would have some track use, but it's mostly a street car. I'm curious as to what those heads would do with a FI TT kit though. Still mulling that about...despite the fact that I REALLY want an R32 GT-R and they cost about the same. lol The Z just deserves to be faster.
Also, just came across this...really makes me wary of anything IPP... |
Don't be wary of IPP based on that one event. There's more than one shop involved in that debacle, and no one except the parties to the disaster knows how much blame should be put on each party.
The real issue is that, for the cost of a hypothetical 400whp NA Z (since no one had done it yet), you've spent the same amount as a 600whp boosted Z that is a lot more driveable. The one guy who got closest to 400 NA spent a fortune on one off parts, ditched the AC and those numbers weren't on pump gas. Honestly, either do bolt ons/tune/gears, or forced induction. Either be happy at 340ish whp or be prepared to throw a lot of money at the car. |
Plus one on that. To sustain 8k plus you would want a billet crank and figure out the intake side of vvel
