Grinding going into second gear
This has happened about 3 times since I've owned the car. The last time it happened I was approaching a left turn and was in third gear. I downshifted to 2nd with SRM and the clutch fully depressed but when putting it into second gear I heard a grinding. With my foot still fully depressing the clutch and my speed now in range of 1st gear I just put it in neutral and then first. I was able to get into second gear after and didn't have any problems. Is my clutch on its way out? I bought my car at 12k miles and it is now at 20k. I don't shift aggressively and also have the rjm clutch pedal mod.

https://youtu.be/QHjw7U0WLOQ At 21 seconds you can hear the grinding sound from going into 2nd gear from third gear. The second scene shows a test from flooring it in 6th gear on the freeway - no slipping here. The third scene shows flooring it from 6th gear on a hill. In the third scene the car immediately dropped below the idle rpm and didn't 'slip'. |
Sounds to me like your synchronizer in 2nd gear and possibly 3rd gear is faulty. Your transmission needs to be overhauled or replaced.

Sounds like your RJM pedal is not adjusted properly to allow the clutch to fully release sometimes.

I agree with the clutch pedal adjustment as a first check. Ryan is very specific in his instructions about getting it setup correctly to make sure you can get into all of the gears. If the pedal is out of adjustment, you can completely block a gear or just enough to experience what you're describing.

For those who prefer to have a lower engagement point than the stock must adjust it properly or risk not releasing the clutch fully. Our Z's notchy transmission doesn't help either. There always seems to be a bit fraction going into 2nd. Quote:
