CV Boot torn / empty - Repair or Replace
Had the wheels off the car this weekend to discover the rear passenger CV joint boot has split and spit grease all over the inside of my wheel and suspension.
Looking for suggestions: 1. $250 - Replace the CV boot and repack w grease 2. $850 - Replace Right-rear axle Car has 84,000 miles, and daily driver. |
For the average DD, I'd say go with option one (after doing a thorough inspection of the CV). Going by your sig, yours is not the average DD, so, with 84k miles, it might be a good idea to to change the CV. It really depends on the condition of the CV and if any dirt got inside the boot.

Well it's free to cut the boot off, pull it apart. and give it an inspection. If there's no appreciable wear or gouging, and the joint wasn't making any noises while driving, I would go with a regrease and a new boot. Wear some disposable gloves, and have a ton of paper towels on hand. Don't let that grease touch you cause it is nasty.

If the CV is not making any noise, re-grease and put a new boot on it. If not, replace the CV joint, etc.

Sounds like you have driven it for awhile with the boot ripped. No grease in boot. Wonder how much grit you got inside the joint? If it was me. I would replace the joint. Wouldn't want to take a chance that one of the balls got damage. Chances are you will never see the damage unless you get lucky.

Well at 84K miles you got all the life you could out of the CV boot. I would opted to just replace the right rear axle better safe than sorry. Also definitely inspect the CV boot on the other side for damage and replace as nessesery don't cheap out on the general maintenance on your 370Z. Maintenance go's a long way on our cars.
