You should be able to rent/borrow an o'scope.

What im wanting to test is the fan motors themselves though, the control module i know is good as it is s brand new unit, the motors on the fans is what im unsure of. I've seen guys test the fan speeds with the higher priced scan tools, but just wasnt sure if there was a way to test the motors at their different speeds without that

I'm amazed at how complicated this is getting to try and resolve! Interesting though.

Update: finally had another over 80 degree day and tried out the ac once more.....engine started overheating again. Went ahead and have ordered a brand new water pump and will update once i find the time to install it

Spooler 07-16-2017 01:13 PM

Sounds like you have a blown head gasket. This is the only thing that I know will cause this type of issue except for an electric fan issue where the fans will not kick up to high speed.

Radiator pressure test passes, block test passes and no pressure left in system when car is run hard and left to cool down overnight, all of which would have indicated a blown head gasket. Only thing left to provide a definitive answer on that would be a compression test which i will most likely do after swapping out the water pump, but i have my doubts that the head gasket has anything to do with it as i have been talking to several other mechanics including those at corner 3 garage and with all the information I've given them they doubt it's the head gasket as well and have come to one of two conclusions....either the water jackets around the cylinders are clogged or the water pump impellers have corroded away. Being that their is no record of the coolant system ever being flushed or serviced and with all the troubleshooting that I've done along with the mechanics it leaves me with the only component i havent addressed in the system, which is the water pump. I know it's hard for some to believe that our water pumps could fail due to how they are constructed, but with how acidic coolant can become after so many years of not being changed you kinda have to entertain the possibility of that acidity eating away at the impeller on the pump. I will update this thread when i get the time to change out the pump and will let everyone know the results along with pics if i can get them.

When you swap out water pumps. I would like to see pictures of the impeller. Be best if you can show both new and old.

May have finally gotten the water pump to give up the ghost and caught it in the act. Started car from cold start today with no load on engine and low and behold i can hear the faint sound of.....squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak. Bend down in the engine bay to try and locate it and nearest i can tell it's coming from where the water pump sits. Definitely not belt squeak or pulleys as i have already dealt with that in the past and know what it sounds like so i think we have a winner here.

Rusty 07-16-2017 09:06 PM

That could be the bearings going bad now.

So after a long process of gathering up parts i have conclusive evidence the water pump was bad, so without further ado here is your so called indestructable water pump on our cars.....

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5099c1fe25.jpg

All that white crusty stuff and some clear water you cant see is from the weep hole....somebody has taken this engine apart before and had sealed the outer weep hole so there was never going to be a trace of coolant leaking from the water pump....on top of that the primary timing chain was put on in a haphazard way so it was on correct timing, but the colored keys on the chain werent lined up with the timing marks on the crank and camshaft sprockets....needless to say all of this is in the process of being corrected

P.S.

There was actually more white chalky crap in there before, but my helper took some of it out before i got a picture

Further proof the water pump was leaking, this is the bolt that was sitting next to the water pump

Colored links on the chain are an aid for installation only and will not align with every revolution of the engine. The number of links on the chain is not divisible by the number of teeth on the sprocket.

According to fsm the keys on the sprockets and the colored links are supposed to match up with each other

I got it now, sorry i had just woken up when i saw your reply, i get what you’re saying now....so basically after installation even though the keys line up they will eventually drift out of sync with those keys once the engine is running.....is that the gist of it?

Not eventually, but after a single revolution.

Somebody obviously sealed up the weep hole on purpose. Glad to see you tackle this job on your own. Make sure you double check everything that you do when putting it back together.

You're still installing new oil gallery gaskets right? Let us know how they look.

I inspected the gasket material all around the oil gallery covers and no leaks and no signs of the gaskets falling apart....im trying to convince my helper to replace them, but he doesnt want to mess with them if there’s nothing wrong with them. Interesting note though, when i dropped the lower oil pan there was a few little shavings of what looked to be aluminum, but other than that oil and upper oil case were clean

Do oil pumps go out on our cars?

Im still left wondering why a pressure test didnt uncover this issue....thinking maybe all the crap that the chemical flush knocked loose clogged up the weep hole

Well....................................They've been known to fail with high rpm use.

Couple of choices.

I have thought about upgrading the oil pump, but if it ever breaks down im most likely gonna go with a dry sump setup for track duty so i dont have to worry about oil starvation so much

I see nothing wrong with that water pump. It appears you have blown head gaskets. That is what I would change next.

So the fact it was leaking from the weep hole means nothing? Not even the orange sludge buildup and flattened out coolant seal?

Spooler 11-18-2017 01:41 AM

The weap hole is on the back of the front cover. I haven't seen a picture of that. That is not the water pump weep hole on the front cover.

Same white chalky residue, plus water and sludge on the rear cover, i showed the front cover to show that the person who worked on it before me had sealed the weep hole

Forgot to mention....thanks for all the advice dread, really helped speed things along when putting this monster back together lol.....also thanks to spooler, phunk and anyone else I forget to mention for putting up with me these past few months. It has been quite the learning experience, but I’m all the better for it :)

Im just glad you found something and handled it. For I while there I was wondering if you weren't just an automotive hypochondriac or running out of things to "fix" around the house!! :rofl2:
