No, you can leave the console in. It's out in my pictures because I was installing a short shifter, and that made it easier to install.

Follow this writeup to get to that plate (link)

I will say that boot was really attached to that plate on my car, and the reason I took the entire console out. I didn't see a way around it in my case. If you have the audio connectors in the console, pull the cup holder out, and disconnect them through there, everything else comes out easily. No big deal.
