New reccommended oil?????
Last Thursday I got an oil change at a Nissan dealer. I have been getting oil changes at this dealership all along & they have been putting 5w30 Mobil 1 in. This time when I looked over the paperwork I noticed that 0w20 full synthetic Nissan oil had been used. I questioned this & was told that 0w20 was the NEW recommended oil for the 370Z.
Well I headed on home but couldn't get the idea of 0w20 being used. I fired an E-mail off to Nissanusa & asked the question if 0w20 was now the recommended oil for the 370Z. That was a total waste of time. Their answer was, go to your local dealership & ask them. I've been spending lots of time searching the internet on the topic & am finding that more manufactures are going to either 0w20 or 5w20 but haven't found anything about a Nissan change. WTF :confused: |
I use 5-20m1 in my Z. There should be little to no difference in 0w or 5w 20 in most cases. The first letter means the oil more viscous (easier to pump) when cold. This is important if you live in cold climate as cold weather = more viscous oil =harder for car to crank, turn over, then run with improper lube as target oil viscosity has been reached. The second number is the oil's viscosity once warmed up which usually lies within engine operating temps of 190-220. So both these oils will act the same once heated to operating temps.

I dont even know if Nissan makes a "full" synthetic oil...maybe they put another brand in....thats why i do my own oil changes..
just bought a 17 CRV, honda recommends 0-20wHonda oil which is a partial synthetic, its a turbo also.. |

Back in The Good Old Days, 20 weight oil would have been way too thin. With modern materials (better bearing alloys) and construction (tighter clearances), it's just right for many automotive applications. That said, I would keep an eye on temps and maybe even do a UOA next change. Just in case. After all, I'm just some bozo on The Intertubes. |
I think most of the new cars use 0-20 to get better gas mileage.
I am curious if it would be too thin for the Z when the motor is warmed up. Quote:

I found an online calculator for viscosity to temperature. I now run a mix of 30 and 20. I did this after installing my oil cooler because i could hear the difference in the engine with the cooler oil.
|
Until Nissan Corp. informs me in writing, or the dealership can show me in writing of this official revision, I am sticking to 5W30. Since you are the customer who is paying for the oil change on your vehicle, the dealership cannot simply dump whatever oil they want into your Z.

I will be watching the oil temps & will post back on what I see. |
As long as you can maintain good pressure and flow, you should be OK. The new synthetics are sooooo much better than the petroleum-based lubes I grew up with. Heck, even dino oil is a lot better now.
I predict that materials/construction and lube technology will continue to improve so that recommended viscosity will drop to 0W10. But I got stuck with a bunch of Enron stock, so I'm no oracle. |
I agree. Calls for 5w30 and 20 weight is too thin.
|
If the engine didnt have oil temp issues I wouldnt worry, but it has serious oil temp issues!
I can overheat my oil in less than 1/4 mile of agressive driving with 5-30 mobile 1 at 60F ambient. (My cooler kit is here waiting for install.) No way I would use 20w oil or lighter with this engine. |
curious to see how the thinner oil effect the oil temp. it will flow better and may even disperse the heat better? I got this quote from the Mobil site regarding the M1 Synthetic oil: "Mobil 1 advanced synthetic motor oil provides outstanding high-temperature performance and is proven to protect at engine temperatures up to 500°F"
I suppose the most important factor is how well the oil lubricate the engine. Quote:

Is it that time of the year again? :wtf2:

Also, they can just stock 1 brand of oil. Maybe Mobil is not giving them a good price break on bulk and it doesn't say NISSAN. I figure most of it is for $$$$ and some for marketing. If we take the average, non-mechanical minded driver, and put two oil containers in front of them, Mobil 1 and the other NISSAN, they will most likely ask for the Nissan, just because it is made by the OEM. Throw in the nifty Salesman ( which most service managers are now) and it will be easy to pitch whatever you are going to make lots of money on. The $h*t they throw at people. |

if you are tracking your car it is very likely you are using on oil cooler so Mobil 1 Racing, Motul 300V, or Torco SR5-R will all work well. street cars will not see a difference. However they probably screwed up, put the wrong oil and tried to cover it up. Next time don't let them talk you into keeping what they put in there. it's not your fault they made a mistake. -Juan |

I agree 5W30 for 370Z. ONLY. |
Well I've put a couple of weeks on the new oil & I don't see much of a difference in the two. The temps here have been running in the 85 - 90 range. I've done some city driving & some highway. Temps seem to be very close to what they have always been. If anything they might be 1 to 2 degrees lower. The only real difference I see is that it takes a lot longer for the temps to come up. There seems to be a difference in opinion as far as 0w20 vs. 3w30 with the members posting here. I guess I'll just let it ride for awhile & see how it goes.

Ive always brought my own filter and oil whenever i feel the need to use their inspection printout (tire wear, pads etc). 10$ in labor and a decent wash after. My first ever oil change from them with my used Z was a half and half castrol stuff and I felt like i was ripped off for the price (like always) i paid -or could have paid if i supplied my own and have em do it. My dealer doesnt carry the special nissan sauce..ester? which they said would run about 120$. I have used 0w40 once or twice in my Z and G.. only difference was the same as you, felt like it took a little longer to bring up to temp. After my 19 oil cooler install, I went back to 5w30. Temps still come out slow even with about half of it blocked off. Back on topic, OP, do let us know if any problems come up. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Anyone try the new germal castrol 0w-40 or mobil 1 0w-40? These are the only "true" full synthetics that castrol and mobil offer in the US. They are a very thin 40w and Im thinking it will shear down nicely, possibly to a perfect oil for summer/zdayz abuse?
|
Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 in my Z. Screw the dealership....if it has been good since the 370z started that's nearly 9 years...and I have read of zero engine related failures or problems in this car. In fact after exhaustive research and trial and error I concluded this is one of the most reliable performance cars in existence that's why I purchased it so ...why the change? I am not buying it OP...

redline 5w30, true group 5 ester full synthetic....only other oils like it are amsoil and royal purple..

So, I was looking at the Mobil1 EP vs Regular Mobil 1 Syn, and I see that the specs are identical. The only thing it appears that you get with the EP is extra price and a 25,000mile Guarantee? |
Ok so I don’t feel so bad now. I too went to a Nissan dealer for an oil change and after getting home I realized they put 0w20 in my 09 as well. I googled “Nissan tech put 0w20 in my 370z” and it brought me here haha. Maybe it is the new recommended weight for the Z.

My 370Z sits right around 200-215 when operating temperature is reached no matter for 5W30 synthetic motor oil I use which is normal temperature according to a lead Nissan automotive technician I talked to before he said use what ever oil motor that works best in your vehicle. I will be sticking with 5W30. I think 0W20 and 5W20 is way too thin. I found out one of our local Nissan dealership service departments is using Mobil 1 Synthetic 5W30 and Valvoline SynPower Synthetic 5W30 on all oil changes in Nissan 370Z’s and Nissan GTR’s. I have been using Valvoline SynPower Synthetic 5W30 and a Mobil 1 oil filter on all my oil changes. My advice is on your next oil change send a sample of your oil motor oil off to get tested and post up the results. Then you will see how great the motor oil you are using is.
