New reccommended oil?????
Last Thursday I got an oil change at a Nissan dealer. I have been getting oil changes at this dealership all along & they have been putting 5w30 Mobil 1 in. This time when I looked over the paperwork I noticed that 0w20 full synthetic Nissan oil had been used. I questioned this & was told that 0w20 was the NEW recommended oil for the 370Z.
Well I headed on home but couldn't get the idea of 0w20 being used. I fired an E-mail off to Nissanusa & asked the question if 0w20 was now the recommended oil for the 370Z. That was a total waste of time. Their answer was, go to your local dealership & ask them. I've been spending lots of time searching the internet on the topic & am finding that more manufactures are going to either 0w20 or 5w20 but haven't found anything about a Nissan change. WTF

I use 5-20m1 in my Z. There should be little to no difference in 0w or 5w 20 in most cases. The first letter means the oil more viscous (easier to pump) when cold. This is important if you live in cold climate as cold weather = more viscous oil =harder for car to crank, turn over, then run with improper lube as target oil viscosity has been reached. The second number is the oil's viscosity once warmed up which usually lies within engine operating temps of 190-220. So both these oils will act the same once heated to operating temps.

I dont even know if Nissan makes a "full" synthetic oil...maybe they put another brand in....thats why i do my own oil changes..
just bought a 17 CRV, honda recommends 0-20wHonda oil which is a partial synthetic, its a turbo also.. |

With modern materials (better bearing alloys) and construction (tighter clearances), it's just right for many automotive applications. That said, I would keep an eye on temps and maybe even do a UOA next change. Just in case. After all, I'm just some bozo on The Intertubes.

I found an online calculator for viscosity to temperature. I now run a mix of 30 and 20. I did this after installing my oil cooler because i could hear the difference in the engine with the cooler oil.

Until Nissan Corp. informs me in writing, or the dealership can show me in writing of this official revision, I am sticking to 5W30. Since you are the customer who is paying for the oil change on your vehicle, the dealership cannot simply dump whatever oil they want into your Z.

As long as you can maintain good pressure and flow, you should be OK. The new synthetics are sooooo much better than the petroleum-based lubes I grew up with. Heck, even dino oil is a lot better now.
I predict that materials/construction and lube technology will continue to improve so that recommended viscosity will drop to 0W10. But I got stuck with a bunch of Enron stock, so I'm no oracle.

If the engine didnt have oil temp issues I wouldnt worry, but it has serious oil temp issues!
I can overheat my oil in less than 1/4 mile of agressive driving with 5-30 mobile 1 at 60F ambient. (My cooler kit is here waiting for install.) No way I would use 20w oil or lighter with this engine. |

curious to see how the thinner oil effect the oil temp. it will flow better and may even disperse the heat better? I got this quote from the Mobil site regarding the M1 Synthetic oil: "Mobil 1 advanced synthetic motor oil provides outstanding high-temperature performance and is proven to protect at engine temperatures up to 500°F"
I suppose the most important factor is how well the oil lubricate the engine. |
