Finished up bolting everything except one coolant hose. Driver side inlet just barely fits but I used a little heat wrap between to cushion it.

Need to modify the passenger side to fit. Hoping i can get that done tomorrow so it's ready for reinstall.

You should make a copy of your coolant lines so you can sell them with your adapters. So it can be more plug n play for us less mechanically inclined folk :D

P.S. This is sign I shouldn't attempt to drop my engine :rofl2:

:iagree:

I want to see how much you spend at the end to decide if do this or buy a TT kit ;)

SgtGoldy 05-08-2017 09:52 AM

^Agreed, curious to see what you saved or spent vs something like FI TT setup.

Jayhovah 05-08-2017 10:21 AM

Looking good!

Excited to see the motor back in and even more excited to see the IC piping take shape.

I can make them for sure. I already took measurements of all the lines and even bought a kit to test them for leaks. If enough people are interested by the time I'm done, then I can sell the lines and adapters together.

If I wasn't a college student and had more savings I would of even had the inlets and downpipes done :/ maybe another time.

As of right now, I'm just missing the downpipes, air filters and welding the bov brackets on my intercooler piping. I'm just at about 4k spent (Inc. clutch and flywheel) and intercooler so I'm hoping my budget will just stay under 6~k with a tune.

Compared to the FI TT kit which is arguably the best kit out there, I'm still at less than half the cost of their kit.

Now don't get me wrong, If I could afford the FI kit, I would have gotten it as it takes way less time to install and less downtime. But saving more than 6k to be spend on doing way more modification is worth it for me since the Z isn't my daily and I did it in winter. Just wish I had started earlier :)

Anybody know if these are normal or are they cracks in the subframe? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...8544454fec.jpg

Optimiser 05-09-2017 02:05 AM

I reckon they'll be normal surface cracks on the aluminium casting and nothing to worry about.

Nah not normal at all. You're car is pretty much totaled. Tell you what, I'm feeling generous... Sell me your totaled build for 15k. Wait, finish the build first then sell it to me for 15k.

Nice try! I got a few more things done but for 15k it will have to be as is.

If you want peace of mind. Get someone who does NDT and have them dye-check it.

NDT - non-destructive testing

GT-R turbos on the VQ37

New update. Was about to finish installing the engine but the driver side inlet didn't clear one of the AC lines :( so i will have to cut it in half just like the passenger side.

All things considered, I'd say that's not too bad!

Yeah i agree but it's been one tiny problem after another haha so it has delayed me a lot.

I finally got it back on today and hoping to have a helping hand so i can drop the engine back in tonight.

My question is, why didn't Nissan do this? Build looks great, can't wait to see a dyno sheet!

Yeah unfortunately i couldn't afford the 1LE so i had to settle with spending 1/2 of it's cost including the turbos :)

My guess is they didn't want to undercut the GTR.

I sometimes daydream that maybe a very special person at Nissan with enough pull had a 370z made like this

Both sides in. Fits perfectly including clearance to chassis, steering coupler and shaft, and even the stock fuel heat shield!
Working on it at the moment so just this for now

GT-R turbos on the VQ37

I must of jinxed myself. The steering shaft has zero clearance what so ever if i tilt the engine back a little (still not sure how to make it at the right angle without attaching the trans and bolting everything)

Anybody has any ideas? It's hitting the heat-shield bolts at the bottom and even grinding them a little bit doesn't help.

Unless i'm tilting the engine way too far back, then it might clear if i put it at the right angle. Does anyone have pictures of their engine mounted without the intake manifold in place? That would help me visualize it a bit.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4b6f169e13.jpg

These are pictures from the german shop who has built a few 370Z's using gtr turbos. It almost looks like their steering rack is in a different location?
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b7665a4d16.jpg

Any ideas/ help would be really appreciated as I'm really out of ideas at the moment :/

Yikes I was worried for you about that steering shaft coupler.
Gamma kit does space the engine up a little bit, no more than you could with the Z1 mounts though. I think the older GTM kits added some kind of extension or something for the steering shaft (Chuck?)... I think the FI kit may adjust the position of the steering rack but not sure about this either (Hotrodz?).

It looks like the first versions of the GTM kits had a similar issue. I found something about it but no details at all on how i would add the extension or move it?

Think some of the OG's with GTM kits should be able to chime in and help you out... You may also consider posting a thread in the FI subforum asking for pictures of the steering shaft modification for the GTM v1 kit ...

While you're at it, you might have a mod move this thread there =) Could garner a little more attention and support from the rest of the FI guys who might not wade around in the general engine section... Good luck man, you'll figure something out. Too skilled!

Thank you again for your support! I was happy today and was thinking i'd have the trans and everything back but there's always something waiting for me :/

Hopefully somebody chimes in tomorrow

Id install the trans and get the engine angle sitting right. Otherwise you are sort of working blind.

I worked on it for about 5 hours today. The darn thing wouldn't slide in. I did use the allignment tool again to check and it fits perfectly so I guess I just need to try it again tonight. Any tricks you use to slide it back in?

By yourself? Lot of work. I laid under the trans with a jack between my legs. Put my feet on the bell housing and put the drive shaft in so i could turn and push

One of those plastic "alignment tools"? Honestly I've had better luck centering the clutch disc by eye/fee! than using those tools. There is so much slop in those generally that you can still get the disc not quite centered when you tighten down the pressure plate even with the tool. I'd loosen the pressure plate again, try to center it again and really pay attention without trying to rely as much on the tool to hold it centered.

Of course I'm sure you know that, its probably just you're frustrated with it. Usually what happens. If you called someone else over to help with it they'd get it first try, that's what usually happens to me...

I think I just have the engine at a different angle so that's why it's not mating right.

Hopefully it will slide in tomorrow otherwise I'll have to lower the trans and check the clutch/pressure plate again

Thanks for the ideas guys! Hopefully no more problems tomorrow

That black plastic alignment tool is not the best. Go and loosen the bolts to everything with the tool inside. Then lift up a little on the tool to drive everything up a little then tighten things down before you torque it to the correct lbs.

YzGyz.

husam2012 05-17-2017 12:09 AM

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

By trying the tool again, it seemed like it didn't want to go in smoothly so i redid everything and i think it slid in now! There's still about a finger gap but i believe i can just use the bolts to bring them together now?

Ran out of time today so will start working on it again tomorrow morning hopefully!
