Steering wheel pump *whining steering wheel when turning
Hi can i ask your expertise guys regarding the TITLE issue. Unfortunately nissan said it needs to be replace. Parts labor excluding tax was $1400..... anyone here replaced their steering wheel pump or experienced whining noise when turning? Howd you fix it?

Most likely pump. But make sure you have enough fluid as well.
Buy a used rack/pump off eBay, install |

I'd try what has been mentioned already before replacing the pump. Verify pump reservoir level and add as needed. If that doesn't help, drain and refill with new fluid.
|
Make sure that the correct fluid has been used. Power steering fluid is NOT the right answer. The system takes Dextron III. Look it up in the owners manual. This is the number 1 reason for pump whin on any Nissan product. I would do a fluid exchange. If you don't know how, get someone else to do it that is qualified.

Check for foam in the reservoir too after it's been running. That would indicate air is being sucked in somewhere and could be the source of the noise.

:iagree:
I read somewhere that it is not good for the pump when it's turned all the way to either side and stay there for a long duration. OP - how many miles you have on your car? Quote:

do a flush/refill several times if needed..did my honda and it was brown liquid grease in there,,several flushes and its like new,,had to use a turkey baster to get the bottom sludge out/

Low fluid level was the case on my truck.

From: GTM after fluid change:
4) With the engine idling, hold the steering wheel at each lock position for 3 seconds (do not exceed 10 seconds as the power steering pump may be damaged) and check for power steering fluid leaks.**Repeat several times at approximately 3 second intervals.*** 6) With the engine idling, check the power steering fluid reservoir for bubbles and white contamination.**Stop the engine if bubbles and/or white contamination are present.** After waiting for the bubbles/white contamination to dissipate, repeat step 4. 7) Stop the engine and check the power steering fluid level, fill as necessary |
whine from power steering pump
I had a whine sound from my 2012 370Z (35,000 miles) that increased with RPMs that originally sounded like a bad alternator. Dealer changed alternator - no improvement.
Then the idler pulley and tension pulley and belt was changed - no improvement. They then replaced the power steering pump and the noise went away - but only for 2 months and about 1500 miles. After a week of investigating, I found a TBS (ITB12-035) that only applied to the Infiniti 35 that stated a bad power steering reservoir could cause a whine sound. Today, the Dealer replaced the reservoir and the sound is gone. Something you may want to check. The power steering fluid in my original reservoir looked like it was boiling when the engine was running. The Nissan tech stated they would add the 370Z to this bulletin, but who knows. |
so the new reservoir doesn't do that?
