Computer memory saver

My battery is almost 6 years old and I'm considering changing it before the weather gets bad, even though it still seems strong. I was wondering if one of those cheap 9 volt computer memory savers are safe to use?

Probably safe but, IMNSHO, not needed. You will lose ECM tuning data but that only takes a few minutes of driving to recover. The windows will act flaky until you do the reset procedure (takes about a minute). And you'll probably have to re-program the presets on the radio (shouldn't take but a few minutes).

Also trip computer data and maintenance intervals are reset too if I remember right.

I bought a cheap one at Advance Auto Parts - the kind that plugs into the cigarette lighter. It doesn't work at all on the Z; probably a waste of time/money.

Correct. Any time power is cut (remove cable or dead battery) all of that info goes by-by.

The batteries Nissan uses are a tank! My 2009 still rocking the original battery. Ive let it go to zero while the car was stored several times, and it takes a recharge like a champ and keeps on going.

I have to admit I'm pleasantly surprised how good mine still seems. I don't depend on the Z during the winter so I think I may just put off buying a new battery and use a maintainer. Most of the time it's in a heated garage which probably helps.

I'm not sure how accessible the battery is in the Z, but in the G requires some window molding/trim to be removed. A pain when it's warm outside, a big headache when it's freezing. Replaced my 4 yr old battery last fall (2015). Car still started fine (though seemed a bit slower than when new). $100 was cheap insurance not to have to do this in the middle of winter.

I didn't use any memory savers or anything. Disconnecting the terminals was the very last thing to do on the old and first on the new battery. Only had to recalibrate the one touch window auto up/down feature. I don't know if I lost presets on the radio as I only listen to mp3/bt. Other convenience settings remained untouched.

the battery will last much longer if it was kept full or near full charge at all time. prolong period at low charge would damage the internal of the battery.

I don't drive my car much, but I hook up the battery tender about once a month to ensure the battery is at full charge. I still have the original 6 years old battery.

It didn't work because the Z's power outlets are off until the ignition turns on, plus when the battery is removed, it has no power....

The best 'memory saver' is one that plugs into the OBDII port and has it's own external power source. Like SouthArk says, the time to reset the radio and the windows is minimal, so why worry about a memory saver?
