Topped off oil, took for test drive and car is abnormally sluggish.
Title says most of the issue. I'm at about 16k miles on my '13, around 5100 miles from the last oil change and I checked my oil this afternoon after driving to work and letting the car sit for 4 hours. It was around halfway down the dipstick dead center between L and H.
I added around 1/2 a qt of oil which took it to just below the H hole in the dipstick. I then went for a test drive. The car immediately felt underpowered. I first noticed it when approaching a stop sign. I usually blip the throttle on downshifts to get the RPM's up and when I did that at multiple stops nothing happened. So I decided to leave a stop sign and attempt to drive the car harder than usually by stepping into it. It felt like nothing was there. The car slowly accelerated and felt extremely underpowered. I drove it for 5 miles or so with no improvement. After I got back to my office building I sat in the parking lot for 10-15 mins and checked the oil level again, it was about 3/4 the way between L and H. I always check when the car is either cold from the night before or it's sat for at least a few hours. Oil: Redline Synthetic 5w-30 Miles since last oil change: 5100 Outside Temp: 83 degrees w/ 53% humidity. I've read on some of the other overfilled oil threads that the ECU might need to be reset? Or that the outside temp is causing an issue? I drove the car this morning to work and had absolutely no issues. Should I drive the car home after work and siphon / drain some oil out of it? I don't want to risk damaging my engine.... Thanks! |

If the oil was too low or if it was over filled you would then have to be worried about causing engine damage.
Has any work been performed on the car recently? Maybe stop by the local auto parts store and have them run codes to see if there is a stored code. Is the check engine light on? You should check your oil when the oil is at operating and let the car sit for 15 minutes and the car is on level ground. Check and add accordingly.

I think I figured it out. I checked the oil after I left work and it was spot on. I think I got bad gas. I got gas the night before. I started the car up after work and it ran perfect regular power was back and absolutely no sluggish behavior. I've been driving th car all afternoon while stopping at various places and it's been perfect. I'm pretty convinced it was bad gas. I'm at my dad's garage right now and he has a code scanner. Just for extra measure I'm going to plug it in and see if throws any codes. CEL was never on.
The only work I had done yesterday was an alignment. And the shop I took it to I trust completely. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Yeah, bad fuel can make your car run like sh!t.
Just monitor the performance of the car and let us know if there are any stored codes.

Just another thing to note. It wasn't in limp mode. Was able to get to 5k rpm it just took forever. I'm helping my dad with a brake job now and I'll scan the car and report back.

I had this same issue. It's your throttle bodies, I'm pretty sure. Had mine changed and was golden. Give that a look.

I did put new R2C intake drop-in filters in march, so it could be that the throttle bodies just need to be cleaned. I'm ordering the intake tubes today so I'll clean the throttle bodies when I swap them out. |

Overfilling will definitely cause huge issues.
I overfilled mine earlier this year and caused major problems. It would not idle correctly and after a serious idle issue the idle reset itself to about 1100 rpm. I let the car drain for an extended period of time to try and clear the air bubbles caused by the overfill. When I drained the oil, there were a LOT of air bubbles. I then had to pull the battery cable to reset the ecu. Due to all of this, I no longer ever fill to the Full line.

so how much did you overfill exactly and curious as to why it impacted the idle speed?

Not sure how much over I was, but when you overfill, the oil gets up in the cam and causing foaming. The foam gets in a while lot if places that it shouldn't including sensors. When I started the car after stopping at a store, the idle felt like I was missing on multiple cylinders. Extremely rough idle. The only cure is to drain and refill. Maybe more than once.

One thing you might try, especially if you have oiled air filters, is cleaning the MAFs. Super easy job - remove two screws, pull out MAF (may have to fiddle with the wiring harness a little), spray MAF with MAF cleaner*, then reinstall MAF (no gasket required). Repeat for other side.
*Just the first link that popped up.
