Building up motor
 

So i've been contemplating on getting the z1 engine rebuild kit form z1, but am pretty sure it would need to be taken to a shop to be installed. I've done rebuilds on a LS1 and an old 200sx motor, but nothing as advanced as the VQ. If I removed the motor and brought it to a shop, what would you think they would charge to swap out the Pistons and Rods? I'm assuming the crank and sleeves are good to stay?

Is your motor in need of a rebuild? A stock VQ in good condition will hold 500+whp with no issue.

No it's not. 500 whp is what i'm going to try to aim for when I go with the BP turbo. I'm just wondering if while my car is down, is it beneficial to upgrade the pistons and rods. The kit is $1200, and wondering what a typical shop would charge for the job. I'm kind of weary about it, as I don't think any shops around here have dealt with VVEL.

Sounds like you don't need to bother with it then ...

Mine is holding up just fine on a stock block and internals at 600whp. Not necessary unless you want big power. If you plan to go e85 and get close to or above 700whp then I would say go for it but you want to get better rods and pistons...Carillo's and you are looking at about $6k for parts and installation. Either way I would look into flex fueling as e85 is plentiful in Vegas and your engine will run cooler.

You can get rods and Pistons for around $1200, but to actually get them in the motor properly will cost you much more than that. I wouldn't recommend just straight swapping over rods and pistons. You would want to make sure your bearing clearances are suitable for the power you're looking for. Also, you would want to make sure your piston to wall clearance is also right. Sometimes standard size pistons aren't actually "standard". Your clearances could vary a few ten thousandths which could cause noise and unnecessary wear.

Now with all of that said, you could probably straight swap it all out and have no issues, but you will be doing it at your own risk.

Yea it's a dd. I'm probably going to leave the internal alone for right now. Maybe in the future i'll buy a used block and build it up
