Release bearing pushes on the clutch pressure plate fingers to release the clutch, Unless whatever is pushing the bearing (slave cylinder) is sticking really bad the release bearing really wont cause a clutch to slip. If it did it would be a REALLY rare occurrence or most likely a poor install and it wasn't centered correctly.
I have however seen this locally with a cheapo/china aftermarket CSC slave that had a plastic guide tube and the bearing was getting jammed on it upon release and would not allow the bearing to retract all the way. High engagement is one thing, High engagement by itself wont hurt anything and can be normal depending on clutch/type design, If it has high engagement AND is slipping there is a problem.
