7AT VLSD fit MT Diff housing?
Hey guys, just picked up a 2010 7AT Sport Touring and I love it! I already installed res test pipes, intakes and catback, but want a little more power. I'm planning on going with a MT 3.69 final gear that my friend has. I want to know if my 7AT VLSD fits the MT housing, his diff isn't VLSD and I would like to keep my VLSD!
I'm new at this so pardon my ignorance lol. |
No it won't swap directly over. It would be a good time to buy a a better LSD at the time you do the swap. You'll enjoy the 3.69's ;)

I'm pretty sure the housing aka the "pumpkin" is the same for both AT and MT. How ever the actual diff, what is installed inside the housing, is different and the main difference is the final drive ratio. The drive ratio is based on the final drive gear that is installed in the diff. As far as I know you should be able to buy a 3.69 final drive gear and have it installed in your VLSD.
The diff (the "pumpkin") out of my Z. BTW it has a NISMO cover plate hence the cooling fins

Inside of the diff housing for my Z. The red arrow is pointing to the final drive gear. Also the installed diff is a Quaife ATB and the one sitting next to it is the factory VLSD.

Couldn't find a definitive answer when searching the forums. Must not have looked in the right spot. I was hoping to find a part number(s) for the housing but it appears that Nissan doesn't sell the housing by its self so they don't list the part number. All the diagrams with part numbers has a line pointing at the housing with the label "Not For Sale". The only way to get a new housing is to buy the whole differential. :ugh2: |
I've been searching too Vabam,,,i may be a jackass on this one-i've seen that a few people have basically swapped everything to make it work;including stub shafts etc...
I currently have a Quaife on order w/some other parts for my 11' Auto & I've asked lot's of people over last couple years about this & everyone says it's gotta be swapped. i'll find out today with a phone call & reply to post. Sticking with my stock 3.359:1 Ratio~I Love the 5th gear top end! |
Has anyone used a VLSD from an 7AT on a MT housing? Does it fit?

You can interchange housings. As long as you are changing all of it.
You cannot swap differential units between the MT and AT though due to the offset. I believe it is .4" difference in offset from the MT to the AT viscous where the ring gear bolts. For instance if you try to use an automatic viscous with a 3.69 gear it will not mesh the teeth, looking at it from the rear the ring would be .4" too far left. You can run a 3.538, 3.692, 4.08, 4.36 gear with a manual diff but not with an auto lsd or open diff unit. If you want to upgrade the gear in your auto you will need a "manual lsd" too. If you want to upgrade the diff only in an auto we have diff options for that but not gear options without changing both. You can do either in your own housing whether it's manual or auto. Hope this helps. |
So it is indeed just the carrier that makes the difference & not the housing, so it would be basically a normal carrier split. Gears 3.538 & lower (numerically higher) = Manual diff, Taller gears need the auto diff. & Either an auto set can be installed in a manual housing, or vice versa. is this correct? I also know the axle stubs are different as well.
Thanks for the insight. :tiphat: Quote:

I think the only difference in stubs is just lsd or not. Most aftermarket lsd's will require the addition of another short lsd stub or some machining of the long lsd stub. Whole housings from 350z or G35 can be used as well, there some small case differences but nothing that has caused any issues from our experience.
We have been installing A lot of diff and gear upgrades and shipping out to clients so we have spent a fair amount of time figuring all this out while preparing more cores to build on an "exchange basis" in the future. |
