Quaife differential install question
 

Good afternoon guys.
Trips, sorry I know it's in the wrong section ;-)


Anyways, for those of you who installed a Quaife without any other mods, did you need to shim the diff?

Some websites say you don't really need to shim a quaife, others say it's 100% necessary, and I spoke to a forum vendor and he said you don't really need to shim it unless you change the ratio out...

That being said... Did you or your installer need to shim it?
Also, if they did or you recommend me buying the shims, do I have to buy all of them and just get stuck with the rest, or can you return them? Lastly, anyone got a few shims?

Yep;put mine in today;used original shims w/new side bearings & came out perfect!
Tight backlash,around .004" and turns easy...
I got a question? mine is an A/T & i noticed that the stub shaft opposite the ring gear,pushed in & locked easier that the other side....note/on an A/T they are the same.
On the bench when you grab each stub shaft....very snug to work gears in ATB,,,but smooth.
other than that...basically a plug & play.

1. Check your pinion depth after the backlash is set.
2. paint 4 teeth and rotate 3-4 times.
3. check your tooth pattern, This will tell you if you need shims.

if the contact pattern is off, shims need to be added or removed to achieve the proper pattern.

with that being said, I wouldn't just throw it in there, and hope for the best.
Or go off what other people are saying.

I was told that my diff didn't need shims, once we had it back together, it needed shims, my tooth pattern was way off.

To do it right, chances are that you will need to shim it to the proper specs unless you just get lucky or 1/2 @$$ it. There are manufacturing tolerances that come into play even from the same manufacture. Remember you are dealing with 1000ths of an inch tolerances. ;)

Yep; backlash spec is .0039-.0059 tighter than some old GM's I've done in the past.
I must have got lucky/ new bearings,same side shims & proper torque & excellent wear pattern

Im having one installed right now. The guy who's doing it has done a number of 370s and it's pure luck of the draw whether you have to adjust anything. Sometimes they bolt right in, sometimes they don't

Cheapest way to have a pro do it is drop the differential yourself then bring it in along with the quaife. Good luck

Just recently did this myself and the oem shims gave me backlash within the spec (.0039 -.0059) HOWEVER the preload was not within spec (7.7 lbs - 8.8 lbs) mine was about 3lbs. I had to get shims that were 5mm more for both sides to bring everything within spec.
