Modifying Stock VLSD

Has anyone toyed with modifying the stock VSLD to lock up better. I've heard about changing shims, but understand this effects gear mesh. Are there other methods that are effective?

I've heard about changing shims, but understand this effects gear mesh. Are there other methods that are effective? I'd like to have a good working diff for the road course.
