90w or 85w
Hey all,
So, you all seem correct on that clutch chatter being from the aftermarket (single mass) clutch/flywheel setup. It isn't a bad sound on cold startup, but once the engine warms up it really gets to talking. It's not a massive deal to me, but I feel like people are thinking my tranny is ground up whenever I'm in low RPMs applying throttle, but I did find that a heavier weight of transmission oil can help mitigate the sound. I've seen a lot of good for both 85w and 90w from Redline, but I can't determine which would be best for my climate. I'm in Northern VA so we get the extremes (upper 90s and humidity in the summer, single 20s and teens in the winter). I'm afraid that the 90w will help in the warmer weather, but when the winter comes it may become extremely difficult to shift. Does anyone have luck in this area with either weight to know which is best/better, and how much of an impact it truly makes on shifting in the winter or when cold? Thanks in advance! |
If it's the clutch making the noise, I don't see how tranny fluid is going to make any difference. What am I missing?

The transmission rattles OEM. The aftermarket flywheel just makes it worse.

:iagree: the OEM dual-mass flywheel chatters, and the single-mass ones are even louder. No fluid is going to help that. Joe at ZSpeed might be able to help you out with some noise reduction options, but if it doesn't bother you that much it's probably not worth the labor cost to drop the transmission just to change out the flywheel or something.
As for transmission fluid, the normal claim is that the Redline fluid smooths shifts or reduces notchiness in your shifts. Use the Redline MT-85 fluid. |
If this is a DD, any of the better "brand-name" lubes (whether for engine, trans, diff) will work well. Going by the comments on this site, the Redline brand that JARBlue mentioned is one of the better ones. Several others to pick from. Lots of which-oil-is-the-best threads on this site.
Tranny oil is cheap and changing it is not difficult (unless you have a turbo manifold like jwick). Try starting with a "heavy" lube this Winter and see how it works for you. If you don't like it, try something a little lighter. Repeat until you find the just-right weight for you. |

Difficult, no, but an entire PITA considering I have to drop turbo manifold to get to the fill bolt. |

Haha thank you all, really appreciate all of the input. I was hopeful that maybe the thicker viscosity would cause some sort of dampening, but won't hold out too much for that. I spent a couple of hours sifting through the threads last night before opening this one since I couldn't come to a solid consensus on 85 or 90 given this semi-specific climate, and changing it definitely doesn't look difficult so I'll probably be doing that soon regardless. Will likely put 85 in when I do, may look into the noise reducing setup to see what kinda total cost that would look like to see if it is worth it, I don't even know what the previous owner had installed here outside of it being a stage 2, so I don't even know the manufacturer unfortunately.
Thanks all! |
I heard somenone sad brake fluid works great!!!:) cuz you know u need vicosity to break.
Lmao j/k |
