Clutch and transmission fluid
 

Hey so I bought a new clutch flywheel setup. I went with the southbend ss ofe and aluminum flywheel. I also got the master cyclinder as well as the zspeed csc. My question is do I have to change my transmission fluid? What about my clutch/brake fluid? Are they the same fluids? What do you guys recommend? And how much of each do I need?

If you bought the kit from Zspeed, just let Joe know you also need fluids. He can add it onto your order.

You bought an upgraded master cylinder? I have some motul transmission fluid if your interested. I bought from z1 motorsports

I suppose you could reuse the clutch fluid if you really had to but I wouldn't recommend it.

More than likely the trans fluid is fine, but, since you're doing all this work, I'd go ahead and replace it. Once a part is broken in, you can't change the oil too often.

The clutch and trans fluid are very different. Clutch (and brakes) = hydraulic; trans (and engine) = lubricating.

Use a high quality brake fluid for the clutch (I run PFC, TYP200, or SRF). For trans fluid I run Redline but I'm sure there are other good options (75w90 or whatever, I forgot exactly).

As was pointed out previously, Clutch/brake fluid and trans fluid are very different.

When was the last time they were changed? I would definitely change the clutch fluid. Even using high quality Motul RBF600 won't cost that much to flush the clutch system, and the crappy CMC and CSC are particularly susceptible to dirty fluid fouling them up. As for the transmission, I do mine about every 20K miles. It costs <$100 in fluid for Redline MT-85, so I figure why wait. A lot of people go 50K miles or more.

Motul "Gear 300" Tranny Fluid
 

My clutch kit from Zspeed came with the Motul "Gear 300" 75w90 fluid. Has anyone used this stuff (in the tranny) and did you find it to be an improvement?

I hesitate to put it in as someone who posted here (see below) said the fluid became "gummy". (I find it a little hard to believe). I would like to hear of personal experiences using this stuff.

I wouldn't think 75w90 gear oil is proper fluid for a clutch system. I use Redline 75w90 in my differential. I use Motul RBF600 brake fluid in my clutch system.

75W90 trans fluid is too thick for Colorado. Probably fine if you live in FL or TX. Gears will be difficult to shift in the cold.

I ran redline MT85 for about a year and half (85xx miles). It was great initially but the following winter shifts were difficult until the trans warmed up. Difficult as in I could barely get it into 2nd. Did a trans fluid change back to nissan OE in the middle of january to fix. Perhaps because of the nature of the fluid (performance), the redline stuff just doesn't hold up as well. We'll see how the car does this winter.

With respect to clutch fluid, it's going to get replaced whether you want to or not during the master/slave replacement. Otherwise how else you going to bleed the line. Any decent DOT4 fluid is fine unless you're tracking the car.

Motul 75W-90 Too Thick?

Is your Redline MT85 fixed viscosity? I wonder because there ain't much difference between the Nissan (75W-85) Fluid (MTF) HQ Multi 75W-85 or API GL-4, Viscosity SAE 75W-85

and the Motul 75W-90. At least I wouldn't think so... I don't drive it much in the winter so maybe its not an issue for me.

So as far as transmission fluid goes what's the best option? I bought the motul fluid 300 for the transmission. Will this be a problem? I live in NY.
