Does VDC hinder acceleration?

From the explanation of VDC in the owner's manual, it sounds like if the system thinks your car is going to lose traction on the road, it will reduce power to the wheels to help prevent you from losing control.

Is it possible VDC can hinder acceleration by over-correcting in a situation where there may be no risk? Should VDC be turned off during aggresive (but still safe) driving?

Interesting. When I read the description of it, "only in the rain" kept popping into my head...haha.

I have too heavy of a foot to drive without it being on. :icon14:

It's whole purpose is to keep you from going fast enough to be dangerous. So yes. Of course on the street I don't see much reason to turn it off, but it's your choice.

jookiyaya 10-25-2009 10:17 AM

haha youre right, i turned vdc off the other day, and i was at those 4 way intersection coming out of a plaza, as usual i stepped on the acc but with some extra pep just to avoid some incoming cars coming from left and right and holy **** my rear right was spinning faster than my left and i started fishtailing from the start and i had to recompensate by swerving....

while all of this was happening, it still wasnt registering in my mind to let go of the dayam acc or break or ANYTHING, but instead i shift to 2nd and continue thinking everything will balance, but then again im going everywhere as im making my left, while my gf is screaming at me wtf am i doing.. haha. that was kinda embarassing. i could just imagine the car next to me saying the same thing..... i babied my beast for so long i didnt know she could do that hehe. I LOVE MY Z

Be warned, there are tons of posts from people crashing into things by goofing around with the VDC off. Just remember that your VDC is off and that it is pretty easy to swing the rear out on a turn.;)

Car control seems to be a lost art.....:shakes head:

EXACTLY why VDC is important. You either have the skills, or use the Nannies....

+1.

But I still keep VDC on most always. If you're smooth it won't ever interrupt you. No need for VDC to interrupt you on the street anyway, unless you're driving like a d-bag.

You and Steve are right... there are a ton of people that get behind the wheel and have absolutely no clue wtf they are doing. That's why you see all of those kids getting killed speeding around in generic sedans because they have absolutely no idea of the general physics of driving... they assume that they'll be able to stick the corner ahead at 60 mph and end up writing it off. :shakes head:

bullitt5897 10-25-2009 11:33 AM

I agree I haz de skillz... I went to a BIG parking lot of an abandoned shopping center and learned how to handle the car VDC off! LOL this car makes for some SICK burnouts :D hehehehe

Yes please be careful with VDC off like modshack put it you will have no "nannies" to save you. This car is extremely progressive when it steps out so use throttle control... a little goes a long way when the back end gets loose. ;)

kdo2milger 10-25-2009 11:54 AM

i always turned off the traction control on the mach 1, except when in rain...

that thing got loose like nobodies business with a quickness!!!

though the z can get loose on ya, its no where near the stangs ability to break loose as easily...:driving:

I believe everyone should learn car control before obtaining their license.

Or, you save the "skills" for areas where it's safe(r) to learn to use them with *this* car. I has skills, just not when it comes to this car in particular. It handles way different than anything I've had before it.

chris410 10-25-2009 06:04 PM

First thing I do is turn it off rain or shine.
So far no issues and the car is rock solid in the rain as well.

fairladyZ34 10-25-2009 06:39 PM

i turned a simple right turn into a u-turn because i acted like a jackass with the VDC off, learned my lesson

G37Sam 10-25-2009 06:42 PM

Funny you guys mention it, this was posted today on myG37

I am so used to turning off the VDC that i forgot it was off. I was coming out of a turn(thank god i didn't do more than just tap the throttle)

I did a nice 180 on a 2 lane narrow road.Only 1 lane each side of the street.

The G gods were looking over me because i thought i was gonna wipe out bad.

could not have been going more than 25-30 tops.

I usually hammer it coming out of the turn in ds if its late, the road is like completly deserted road.
It will make your car faster in a drag, but always drive with it on otherwise.

I drove today for about an hour with VDC off. I tried pushing it just a little more than I normally do (still in break-in period..."pushing" to me is 4.5k rpm) and I couldn't get it to do anything abnormal.

Perhaps I'm still just babying it too much to lose any control. I'll mess with it more once get out of break-in.

:

:iagree:.....There are a ton of people here who have said how intrusive the VDC is and that's why they turn it off...News flash for these guys...It's your driving that's the problem, NOT the VDC. If you're smooth it will never get in your way. Fast is not a problem either so that's not an excuse to turn it off.
Erratic inputs, treating the throttle like an On/Off switch, poor chassis set-up etc. will all trigger VDC. We've heard lots of those stories here and you'll hear the same in pretty much any car forum you visit. First practice "Smooth", then work on the "Fast". Combine the two, avoid the "stupid" threshold, and the VDC light will rarely, if ever, light up your Dash.....;)

I never turn it off cause it doesn't matter.....but then again I don't do any "Hey, watch this!" stunts (even though I do live in North Carolina...:-)

I have yet to turn my VDC off in the 3250 miles I've got so far. There are times when I make some quick shifts and I'll get shut down for a second, but I'm usually expecting it to happen in those cases. Although I've driven my *** off in cars with no VDC TCS or ABS, I still prefer to err on the side of caution and keep my VDC on most of the time.

FuszNissan 10-26-2009 10:24 AM

Doesn't smooth driving = faster lap times???

Exactly!....

earwicker7 10-26-2009 12:57 PM

I always leave it on, but it's not because I can't drive... I look at it like a seatbelt. I don't feel any need to prove my "mad skills" to anyone (I'm almost 40, so those days are long gone), so I'd rather have it there that one time I screw up than be responsible for killing myself or, even worse, someone else. If I ever decide to track it, then I'll turn it off.

That said, it's really not that intrusive if you know how to drive. I've seen it briefly flash during the shift from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd with the accelerator floored. That's it.

1-2, 2-3 shifts are easy to activate the VDC and lock the car down for a second or two. 3-4 is situational, but I've gotten the light to flash at me a couple times. Makes me feel more love for the Z.
