370Z Clutch & Flywheel Recommendations?

2010 370Z
Engine: Stock

I have the infamous CSC (concentric slave cyl. failure) on my 2010 Z (9,000 miles) which I need to fix (with a Zspeed CSC upgrade or similar). Since I'm doing that, I've decided to upgrade the heavy OEM clutch and flywheel to a lighter version.

I'm considering:
ACT Flywheel (#600590 "XACT Streetlite") at 17 lbs. approx. $360.
ACT Clutch Kit (#ACT NZ2-HDSS) approx. $522.

Also looked at:
Southbend DXD Solid Billet Steel $495 ($ouch)
Southbend Clutch #: NSK1000HD-O $735 (This includes the $325 CSC, so not so bad.)

Competition clutch & flywheel: About the same as the ACT parts $

Z1 Performance clutch Kit: $395
Z1 4140 Forged Steel Ultra Light Weight Flywheel $400
(There are good reviews on these Z1 Clutch parts, but I really need to know
what brand and model these parts are before I would consider buying)

Trying to keep the price reasonable since I don't have a high H.P. race car.

Sorry if this is redundant, but I can't find any reviews on the ACT clutch parts. Any info, tips, experiences or reviews on the ACT or others would be welcome and appreciated.

Here's the kit that I had Joe at ZSpeed install. I added the stainless line, Motul fluid and Quiet disk.
I can really feel the difference in the midrange. Pulls much harder.

The reason the South Bend HD-O clutch is $735 is it INCLUDES the HD CSC. Clutch is only $435 but you get the $325 slave for $300 with it. Add for the slave with the other kits and you'll see the South Bend comes out about the same when you total it up.

The SBC Flywheel is a bit more than others but it is 100% billet steel and most likely the only one made in the USA, Not china.

I don't know anything about the ACT but you can't go wrong with either the Southbend or the Z1 setup.

Joe - I came across another one of these clutch upgrade threads within the last couple of days that says your HD CSC is on backorder, that true?

on the zspeed site it shows backorder as well, my clutch pedal is starting to go soft, any ETA on this part? i will prob do what OP is doing and swap everything out

Joe@ZSpeed 05-29-2015 10:40 AM

Yes we are backed up on them, Should have more soon but no ETA at the moment. We are shipping them out as we get them done but there is a wait right now. Ones that are already on order are going out first obviously.

Update: 370Z Clutch & Flywheel Recommendations?

Thanks for everyone's replies here.

I went ahead and ordered the full Zspeed South Bend kit:

Item #: South-DailyVHR-PACK
Manufacturer: South Bend Clutch

(Steel Fly, clutch with "Quiet disc" option, CSC w/insulated line, master cyl., Motul trans. fluid and brake/clutch fluid - $1500).

I want a clutch that is fairly friendly to drive on the street and still get quicker revs so I think this will do it.

I'm pretty sure my pedal problem is the CSC (not the MC) since it only occurs after I've been running hard for a while on a warm day. It gets damn hot down there by the exhaust down pipe where the clutch hyd. line runs next to it.

So, I'm not too happy about the CSC problem, but it is an excuse for me to upgrade to a lighter clutch and flywheel:icon17: which I am looking forward to.

Due to my schedule and the local shop's (Mac Autosport), I won't be installing this kit 'til (6/12). I'll check back in after the install and let you know what I think.

Good Clutch'n Luck to All

Update:
OK, its 6/12 and the clutch n flywheel kit is in. The new clutch has a great feel - not too grabby but good'n solid. I removed the "helper" spring on the clutch pedal lever for better feel also (I have a new weaker spring on order that I found on ebay for $20). Definitely revs/accelerates quicker with the lighter hardware. I find I'm just a tad too slow on the shifting at times now due to the old habit of waiting for the revs to slow down before I upshifted. Now I can shift quicker at a more natural speed. The only compromise from stock is a very slight trans. chatter from just above idle to about 1500 rpm when starting out from a stop. I'm very glad I got the "Quiet Disc" option. A louder chatter would surely annoy me. Yep, I'm definitely happy with the results!

Update 2: Installed the weaker Helper spring for the clutch pedal. Works great. Better clutch pedal feel at engagement point and no loose play in the pedal as was with the stock spring removed. Cheap and easy to do. I highly recommend it.
