Car jumping and engine light?

So I was heading to class today and my car randomly wouldn't move while i was at a red light even though my car was on, so I put on my hazard signals and turned my car off then back on. It started to drive again, however, it would jump so much. Everytime it would shift (automatic) it would jump super hard. Also my service engine soon light came on. What should I do?

49k miles

Get the code for the SES light. Local auto parts store will loan you a code reader if you need one. Hard to diagnose over the internet without more info.

Or you could just take it to a shop or Nissan dealer.

My car has been jumping for quite a bit but now it's happening a lot more often after the light. When the light popped up my car wouldn't move until I turned off my car then back on.

It could be a millions things. First always check the fluids and then get your codes read. It could be an electrical problem, faulty ECU, bad spark plug, faulty O2 sensor etc. etc.

I remember the first time it jumped was when I was using my paddle shifters, I was at around 5k RPM then the car like shifted itself then started jumping. Took it home, turned it on 5 minutes later, and it was fine. This was about 2~ months ago. If that helps with anything... If not, I'll see what info I can get when I Get home

I've yet to find an issue like mine on the forums... I was driving home today and it happened to me once when i went from a slow speed to hitting the gas a bit harder as I was going on the freeway

Modern cars are pretty good at self-diagnosis. Buy/borrow a code reader, grab the code(s), Google the code(s).

How much is a code reader and is it easy to use? if so, where can I get one preferably in stores? And would I have to take it to the dealer no matter what?

From about $20 to as much as you want to spend. Most are very easy to use - plug into port by steering column, turn on unit, push button(s) to tell it to read DTCs.

You can get them at just about any auto parts stores, Walmart, &c, or online.

You can read the codes yourself. As for repairs, it depends on what the problem is and how good of a mechanic you are.

Autozone does it for you for FREE!

Go and have it checked.

Really? There's an Autozone pretty close to me. Whered you hear this from?

Zoren 370 05-13-2015 10:48 PM

I always go there to have my codes checked every-time my SES lights up.

I just pay them with a thank you or buy some stuff I need.

They give me a print out and I have it checked and fixed at my local shop.

You can even borrow some tools with them.

Update us whats the codes are.

Im curious why that thing happens to your Z. Mine is 2011 too. Never had that experience.

louiey370z 05-13-2015 11:20 PM

Sorry to hear your cars been acting up. I just wanted to point out (take no offense) that if this has happened two months ago,you should have looked into it then. Chances are any problem can cost you more the longer you wait. Hope it's something simple as changing out tranny fluid for fresh clean stuff.
Is there a tranny fluid filter on these cars?

SouthArk370Z 05-14-2015 09:45 AM

Go ahead and buy a cheap OBD scanner. A very valuable tool that doesn't cost much. For what you are doing, or are likely to do, you need only a bare-bones model. All it needs to do is read and clear the codes.

Are you sure about this? My wife is quite convinced that mechanical and most other inanimate objects will repair themselves if given enough time

Im not sure if nissan does the same thing, but my wife has a 2011 for fiesta (automatic), and it would stutter a little when she would go from a complete stop (i.e. at a red light). Come to find out she had a manual transmission with a clutch chip to make it shift, and the clutch chip was going bad. A part covered under warranty and again I have no idea if nissan does similar but just a suggestion. Hope you figure it out soon, good luck.
