Clutch Problems

So yesterday I had my second instance where on my way to work my clutch bottomed out and I couldnt get it into gear. Safely pulled into a parking lot and later that day got it towed to the dealer expecting it to be the Slave Cylinder AGAIN. Dealer just called me and said that this time it was the Master Cylinder not giving pressure and Ill have to wait till next week for the part (not a big deal since Ill be out of town next week anyway). I think he said $669 for parts and labor. But at this point Im a little frustrated. I bought the car used last December with 54,000, its a 2011, and it now has roughly 67,000. I thought clutch parts were supposed to last longer than this. Is it faulty parts? Is it natural wear from all the miles? Ive only been driving stick for a couple years now and Im not perfect, is it my fault? I guess Im just upset and frustrated because I love this car and want to mod it but literally the first $1600 I've spent on it is repairing and returning it to stock! Mainly just a rant but any words of wisdom help or encouragement would be greatly appreciated.

Its your CSC, I have a 2010 with 7700 miles, and after hearing about all the issues with the clutch dropping to the floor, I went ahead and bought the upgraded CSC, CMC from zspeed, if I were you, I would do the same thing.

Remember the dealer is in business to make money, if I were you, I would have the car towed to a shop that does good work, buy the parts from zspeed, and have it done the right way. It'd be dumb to replace a bad CSC with another OEM (bad) CSC.

Good luck.

The master is just as failure prone as the CSC. Honestly, if it goes dry like when the csc fails, you need to plan on replacing the master. But that price is highway robbery.

The first time it happened it was the csc which I replaced. This time i thought it was again. I didnt know the Master was prone to failure too. When I thought it was the CSC again I was going to get the elimination kit from Z1. Any recommendations on a master? I havent seen anything on those aftermarket.

You can get a master from napa, I used this one, 2 years now. No problems. 12 month 12,000 mile warranty aswell.
part # 72607 NCF

$118.00

Stealership at it again. I think I paid 100 dollars from Nissan for the MC, and took me about 30min to install, and another 10 to 15 minutes to bleed the system.

Is that one built by napa and same size as oem?

EVOHUNTER 03-20-2015 05:30 PM

im not sure the make of it,

But yah its exact fit.

118$ was Canadian dollars,

Its probably 60-70 bucks US.

It said product line Napa clutches so thats what I assume. When it gets back from the dealership i had planned to go kind of nuts on it and do the Z1 CSC Elimination Kit, SS Clutch Line, an aftermarket master cylinder (I hadnt found one yet but Ill probably use that one now) and an RJM clutch pedal assembly for good measure, since there is apparently nothing bad to say about that. Ive had the car a year, and I dont like this surprise little warning broken crap.

Dough1397 03-23-2015 11:40 AM

johnwiki, did your clutch bottom out and lose pressure? Or did it still have pressure and you were simply unable to engage any gear?

johnwiki 03-28-2015 06:17 PM

Both times it bottomed out and had no pressure. I got an update, they replaced the master but said it still wasnt holding pressure like it should, so theyre going to replace the slave too. But the slave is covered under the warranty this time because its been less than a year since they replaced it.

For others reading this thread, master & slave should both be changed together. In fact ZSpeed will not warrant theirs unless master is changed too and lines are flushed until they're clean. Failure to do both is surely asking for trouble and if your dealer was at all competent, they should have known and explained this.

BTW, my 40AE is at 52K and I am expecting it to fail at any time. I have the ZSpeed in hand and have already warned my dealer that it's had some intermittent softness and I will be bringing it in with the ZSpeed CSC. I just expect them to pick-up cost of MC and labor.

i bought my car at 54k, and it failed at roughly 60k, so thats a good call. And when I was getting the slave replaced, they made no mention of replacing the master, but offered to put in any other clutch/tranny parts I wanted since they were going to have it out anyway.

when replacing the csc and cmc, do we need to remove the transmission?

where is the csc and cmc located?

Yep, Tranny has to come out. Master is on the firewall, but the slave is in the bell housing.
