Default Weird noise as RPM's rise 7AT, Videos in thread

Hello everyone! Long time lurker but have never gotten around to post that much.

I have a 2012 370Z automatic with 32,000 miles on it. Car has never been tracked and is completely stock. I have noticed this noise coming from under the hood for the last 5,000 miles. I have been told by some people it is normal and others it is not normal. I finally decided to take it in to the dealer last week to have them look at it. I was thinking the worst, like something wrong with the transmission. I got the car back the same day and they told me the transmission was fine but the Power Steering was the source of the noise. Gave me a quote of 1500 to replace the power steering pump and hoses since the cars 36000 mile warranty ran out exactly one month ago. However, the guy told me it wasn't really a big deal and the Power Steering didn't really need to be replaced right away. It is just noisy. He said later down the road it probably would need to be replaced. In my opinion I do not believe the Power Steering is the source of the noise. You can take my opinion with a grain of salt though because I am not mechanically sound. I don't think it is the source of the noise because I was told that if it was the Power Steering it would make the same noise when I turn the steering wheel while the car is on and in park, which it does not make that noise.

So anyway, that is the background. As for as the noise, it is in synch with the RPM's. So maybe this noise is normal, I don't know. I am hoping for some of you guys to chime in and take a listen to the videos I posted below.

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks, Cameron.

In this video you can hear the noise pretty well from the time 16-30. You can hear it the best at the 28-30 second mark.

Hard to hear, what exactly is the noise? I kind of hear a high pitch whining noise perhaps?

I suck at describing things, but it could be considered a high pitch whining noise. Did you listen to the seconds I thought you could hear it the best?

Thanks for the reply.

Couldn't hear much in the 2nd and 3rd video, but, in the first video, when you were turning, it sounded like the power steering pump to me.

Does it make much noise at all when you're not turning? Does the noise get louder when you do turn?

It does make noise when I am not turning and no the noise does not get louder when I turn as far as I know. When I am driving in a straight line the noise is still there. The noise is constant. The only time there is no noise is when the car is not accelerating. The noise is constant when accelerating (upshifting and downshifting). The noise is basically in synch with the RPM's. It is hard for me to explain.

Yeah, Cameron, I re-listened to the first video and could hear it while you were accelerating, but it seemed to get louder when you were turning left. I suppose that's because you were going slower and there was less wind and road noise.

At any rate, from what I do hear, it really does sound like your power steering pump. Actually, it sounds like the noise it would make when it's low on fluid. Silly question, I'm sure, but have you personally checked the power steering fluid after getting it back from the stealership? Also, have you visually inspected under the hood, as well as under the car, for any leaks?

I found this video and was wondering if this is similar to the noise your car is making?

Hopefully, others will chime in and offer their feedback and advice. Good luck with the situation, though.

I really appreciate the help. Here is a picture of my fluid levels. This was just taken and the car was last driven about 4 hours ago.

After listening to the video you posted, I want to say it kind of sounds like that. However, my fluid levels appear to be fine. Can you tell from the photo?

Thanks again!

Fluid level looks good. Man, I don't know what to tell you, but good luck and please be sure to update us if you get it figured out.

By the way, $1,500 seems pretty steep to have the pump and hoses replaced. Just my

Yeah I thought it was steep too. Going try and find a shop that specializes in Z's. Thanks again Memphis. I will keep this thread updated. Hopefully more people chime in.

Are you talking about that whine noise? Similar to a stick shift car driving in reverse?

Could be but not sure. When thinking about that no sound comes to mind. Do you know of a video that has that sound?

Definitely get a second opinion from a knowledgeable shop. Or at least a second price - $1500 seems excessive. That's crap that if the PS pump failed just out of warranty. Good luck with the repairs.
