Switching Oil??? Harmful or Not
Hey guys, I have a 2012 370z and I got it used. The guy ran Mobil 1 through the car throughout it's whole life. I wanted to switch to Redline like I have in my other 370, but I am afraid that changing oil will damage the engine. A mechanic also told me if i switch then it will "smoothen down the camshafts." Does this sound correct or what do you guys recommend. They are both synthetic for sure, but does anybody have insight. The car has 22,600 on it now. I occasionally have been driving it on the weekends.

It won't hurt anything, it won't help anything, and the mechanic you talked to should never be let anywhere near a car of yours.

There is no problem switching back and forth. I believe the myth started because when synthetic oils first came out, they caused rubber seals to shrink which caused oil leaks in cars that had no leaks before. The manufacturers have long since reformulated the synthetics and this is no longer a problem.

Switching Oil??? Harmful or Not
I'll definitely stay away from him. I do 99% of the work on my cars myself and rarely go there. I was replacing valve cover gaskets on my Lexus and a mechanic stopped by and looked at the cam shafts and one was starting to "smoothen" and he said that was because I switched oils from royal purple to mobile one. They are both synthetic 5w-30.

This one is a Ls430! Nice guess though, got 123k on the odo and spark plugs were bad, even though they were replaced at 75k -Raj
