2013 oil cooler install
 
Has anyone installed an oil cooler on a 2012 -15 Z. I'm curious to know what the cooler's thermo-plate does with the water collar at the oil filter on these late models.

Does it just stack on or do you delete the water cooled plate?

Hey Greg,

according to Stillen's instructions and how we have done it here; it stacks on. you'll have to use an Oil filter from a GMC truck in order to clear the frame rail, some customers order a non thermostatic plate from mishimoto (thinner profile) to be able to retain the OE Nissan Filter.

You can remove the factory cooler completely like I did with the fast intentions oil cooler.

This allows you to use a longer filter than oem and get rid of the useless 12+ cooler. Call Tony at fast intentions!

No point in using an aftermarket oil cooler with our oil "cooler" it's more of a stabilizer. Not only does it cool but it also gets the temps up to where it's suppose to be. Putting on a cooler without removing oem is a bandaid on a chest would. Just gonna cancel it out.

I have stillen large kit, and mine still over heats and goes into the limp mode after about 10~12min of running. ambient temp was only 23degC or so. I need to keep my aircon at max temp with fan on to help it run cooler :(

Might need a shield to create a box around the core to force more air fed through

Did u uninstall the oem oil stabilizer b4 installing the aftermarket oil cooler other wise they cancel each other out. What ur z u got?

nope I kept it in place.. how can it possibly cancel each other out? the oem sandwich runs coolant through it, which is cooler than oil when the car is driven hard.. and it in fact should help the oil reach the optimum temperature as oil takes ages to heat up compared to water.

the car runs too 'cold' when driven normally, it will never go over 90degC, hardly reachs 80degC while water is around 90 deg all the time. It probably will be even worse if I remove the stock sandwich "heater" haha (I dont think it should be considered as a cooler)

bleunetizen, i assume you have a 2011 or later model since you have the stock oil 'cooler'.

Not that i dont believe you but I find it hard to figure how you are overheating your oil at 23*c ambient. Even at 35*c or warmer, my oil doesn't go over 100*c and that's with just the stock cooler in heavy traffic so hardly any airflow in the engine bay. Even on a spirited drive on a warmish day i never encountered limp mode. i even simulated 108*c oil temp using a fixed resistor and there was no significant loss of power. Are you talking about full on limp mode or just a throttle lag?

But then in your later post you say the oil struggles to reach 80+? Over cooling the oil can be detrimental too! :)

Oh sorry I didn't word it properly haha I meant 10min of track time, it won't see anywhere near that on the street even with very spirited back roads .

Yes I am not happy with the stilled kits thermostat, it has almost no difference than non thermostatic sandwich :( I might make up a cover for the cooler so I can block the air for street driving

Runs coolant through it which may be Warmer than what the oil cooler is bring in this increasing that temp. Don't believe me? Call tony at fast intentions and I told u so.

hmm interesting! that sounds pretty logical. I wonder what the temperature difference is between the inlet and outlet of front mounted oil coolers.

either way, I think creating some sort of shroud to box in the cooler probably will help a lot too, forcing more air fed through..

Even with the added thickness of a Mocal T-stat sandwich plate on top of the OEM temp stabilizer, I can fit up a PL 14610.
