Trunk Light replacement?
Has anyone attempted to replace the rear trunk light? I just swapped out the map lights with blue and also added blue license plate bulbs....got a few spare blue LED's left and figured I'd replace the trunk light.
I popped it off and pulled it free of the wire housing and it looks like it has a tiny fuse and some type of copperish cover somewhat over the bulb. I tried to jiggle it free but no luck. I tried to take pictures but my camera sucks. Any suggestions or ideas? It pops off with just a little pressure with 2 flathead screwdrivers on the sides of the casing. Thats how I did it.....you could probably use just 1 screwdriver and slide it around the casing. |
Of course! My Luxeon K2-based trunk light mod. The bulb is 194 size, but I custom retrofitted the LED:

I have a few White LED's left as well and was about to do this.
At least now I know how to pop off the lens :p thanks 2theextreme  DIGItonium, what did you do to "custom retrofit" your trunk light LED? |
In the 350Z, I created an 18 LED array on a PCB and squeezed the board in. For the 370Z, I mounted a small heatsink to the Luxeon K2 Star and some resistors. Then soldered directly to the bulb socket.

Check my Yellow & Blue gallery thread....I uploaded pics of the blue LED map lights and blue license plate lights. |
blue blue blue blue......lol...nice

Whoa dude... that's hella blue! Haha. The most recent LED mod for me was the amber courtesy LED in the map light assembly. It is a fairly painless mod, once you open up the small module with the LED inside. It doesn't require any solder work as the LED, diode, and resistor are wedged into blade connectors.
It stinks I'm not able to pull off the knobs of the HVAC controls to pull the PCB to change out the LEDs... I'm going to need help from anyone who plans to mod the HVAC LED color. |
I can see it already......modding my lights are my new obsession!! :p
Short vid of how things look @ night......nevermind the end with the moths....I killed 'em after I shut the camera off! :icon17: It is pretty darn blue, isn't it? But I like it! |
I like the inside lights not a fan of them outside. Nice look.

The trunk light was very easy to replace. The housing can be removed with a thin flathead or your finger nails.
Remove the power source so replacing the bulb is easier with the housing free of cords and such. Remove the little plastic clip piece then simply pull out the bulb. Replace with LED 194 type (got mine from VLEDS) and reconnect to power source to verify if it works. If the LED is not lighting up simply reverse the polarity then re-install the plastic clip. Reconnect to power source and put housing back in place. |

if anyone is looking to do this, order the "flank" style bulbs from v-leds. they have 6 leds that face to one side which is perfect for that housing.
