DIY: "Where to place your spanner wrench" MOD!!!

Ever thought about where to place your darn spanner wrenches? I had it in a zip lock bag and stored in the back somewhere until I arrived home this evening and saw my wife baking some chicken. It just came to me at that moment so I went back to my car and pulled out the spanner wrenches stored in my zip lock bag. She just finished so I placed the wrenches in the oven and increased the temperature to 500*. This mod took me about 15 minutes once it reached the desired temp.

Bake your spanner wrench in 500* oven for 10 minutes.

Take out of oven and tie a piece of wire to pull it off later.
Place your hot wrench at your desired spot.
Use appropriate tool or utensil to press your wrench into the foam block.
Press your hot wrench into the block until the wrench has reached the desired depth.
Make sure it is evenly laid across.

Using the attached wire, pull off the wrench from the block.
There will be melted foam stuck on the wrench. Do not scrape it off. Leave it alone and let it cool down. It will peel off on its own once it cools down.

Repeat process for your 2nd spanner wrench.

Here is how it looks once you complete both. But wait you are not done yet!

Heat a piece of spoon and place this on desired spot to create an area where you can stick your finger and pull your wrench off the block.
Press the hot spoon until you reach desired depth. Again, there will be melted foam stuck on the spoon. Do not scrape it off. Leave it alone and let it cool down. It will peel off on its own once it cools down.

Peel off the foam from your wrench and place it onto the chosen spot and admire your great work!

Here's how it looks while in the kitchen.

In the car. Looks good to me. You can place it anywhere you want. I decided to have it on the left side. I have plans for the top right side.

Thanks! I asked myself after I was done, why the heck did I not figure this out sooner. This would look good across the top or right next to each other somewhere or on top of each other on opposite direction, one sunk in deeper than the other.

Did you spray the metal with anything? Or did it peel completely and easily?

I did not have to spray it. The wrench was painted and the spoon was plated. Neither one had issues. It peeled off as soon as it cooled down. Not sure about bare metal. For that I would probably wipe a very small amount of lubricant or bacon fat.

That's a great idea, but wouldn't you want to leave those in your toolbox being that you are supposed to adjust the coils when they aren't loaded (i.e. car is off the ground)? But credit is due where credit is earned and either way that is bad ***!

bravo my friend. I was curious how you did it since I only saw it in your album. Truth be told I thought you had someone professionally drill it out with a machine.

Once you know what 1 turn does on your coilovers, you could make minor adjustments on the fly jacking up one wheel at a time in a pinch and just "know" how it will affect things.

The foam thing is awesome, I had no idea it was so easy to shape with hot metal. I don't have that foam in my car anymore, but now that gives me ideas for organizing some of the tools in a trailer toolbox, just using a square sheet of foam and doing the same thing.

Rep to you my friend. Clever idea.

Dude, this is great! I was literally looking at mine and trying to figure out where to put them!

TheGreatOne 01-13-2014 01:27 PM

Brilliant, way better than having them clang around in the back...

I like my spanner wrench stored nicely along with the hex driver. I just jack it up and adjust on the fly like star mentions below.

 Different types of foam responds differently so test it out first. Some melt quickly.

Thanks SgtGoldy. After completing the first one, I said this is too easy for such a pro finished look.

TheGreatOne, and Mr&Mrs! And yes, I agree about having those things in a nice spot and not just somewhere back there.

You can be really creative on placement. I contemplated on stacking them on top of each other but in different directions where one is deeper than the other. I decided based on what I want to do with the space on the upper right side. I have something in mind for it.

Post pics of what you end up doing.
