Should you do an early oil change?
Took a look and say for yourself.
Note: Oil used 1342km - 1.5 months. Under 4K RPM driving. Slow breakin. 1. Drove the car on the ramp. 2. Used 1342km oil. 3. Metal shaving left over. 4. Nissan Ester Oil. 5. Nissan Ester Oil In. Last edited by YamahaR6; 08-18-2009 at 08:58 PM. |

I think it's a pretty normal finding. Many people including myself have noticed that the engine runs cooler after a few thousand miles are put on the car. My hypothesis is that the higher temps when new are due to increased internal friction which smoothes out with time and use. I think the metal shavings go right along with the theory.

I don't think it will effect the warrenty. Your car doesn't "need" to be service by the dealership to continue with warrenty, (not confirmed by dealership, but can't see why they would when u change your own oil). But do keep your receipts.
Which oil u plan to use? I got the Ester oil alittle bit cheaper. I think it was $13.50 or something. Not a whole lot. But still saved alittle from my dealership. |

Also during the brake in period do not start using synthetics the engine will never have a chance to brake in again. use the oil from the dealer, after the bake in switch to full synthetic

My bike now has 14K miles on it, and my car that came with synthetic has nearly 70K on it. Neither have any issues relating to oil. I swapped my Z at 1200 miles to the same brand of oil I use in everything else (except my truck - it gets left overs and such) - mobil1... I don't anticipate any issues |

I am not sure what your statement means. Yes you changed your oil after 500 miles on your bike to synthetic as did I. That is what I am saying after your brake in period is done I like to switch to synthetic and stay with it. But I would never go against the recommended brake in and put synthetic in before it is recommended.

The deposits found in your oil is more than likely from the break in at the factory, which is the first few minutes of life they run it all the way up to redline to get the rings seated. Even then, if they drained and refilled, not everything is going to come out when you drain the oil There is SOME break-in that happens afterwards, but not enough that you should only use dino-oil. I know from reading that brake in is not from the factory. Also that I have never ever seen a car come with synthetic in it and we have 3 brand new cars in the drive way. I am not saying that it is not possible but the engine has to brake in over a period of miles. That is why they give you a certain amount of millage before you can stomp on the gas. I also doubt that they run it to red line at the factory as that can cause scaring of the walls. Brake in allows the pistons and the walls to be smoothed along with allowing the rings to be seated along with other things. I would never put in synthetic before a brake in is done as not everything is seated yet.

I believe breaking in a new car hard or soft...syn. or dino is really a personal preferences. I don't think there are "actual" data out there that can prove that one is better than the other.
But the bottom line is, there's no harm going by the book. RPM underr 4K and Redline states on the bottle "not for new engine, allow for 3K break in period". Yes there are some car that comes with syn. oil. But my thought is, there's no harm following the book. |
