I'd mark the shaft, try it under pressure, if the rod doesn't move then you might be good. If the rods spinning and spinning you're going to mess it up. Techs and manufactures didn't add the allen, hex or slits for nothing! At least first hold the rod and break the nut lose. Then take it off with a air gun.
