DIY: Install Fringe XVO Afterburner Tips for HKS Exhaust System

The Fringe XVO Afterburner tips are designed to replace the stock Ti tips on the 370Z HKS exhaust system. The full development story of the Fringe XVO tips is here:
http://www.the370z.com/exhaust-intake/41572-new-fringe-xvo-afterburner-exhaust-tips.html

This thread is the DIY for replacing your HKS tips with the Fringe XVO's!

Step 1: Order a set of tips from Fringe!

This is a pic of the two tips side by side

http://www.the370z.com/members/wheee...comparison.jpg

Step 2: Make sure you have the necessary tools and supplies for the removal of the old tips and install of the new Fringe Afterburners. You will need a 10mm wrench and a 4mm allen head wrench. I recommend the small ratcheting tools that allow you to work inside the exhaust tip easily.

Step 3: Remove the stainless steel bolt and lockwasher from the inside of the Fringe Afterburner tips. These will be mounted during shipping.

http://www.the370z.com/members/wheee...or-install.jpg

Step 4: Using the 10mm wrench and the ratcheting 4mm hex, remove the two bolts and washers holding each Ti HKS tip onto the exhaust outlet. Slide the Ti tip off the exhaust and place it onto a safe surface to prevent it scratching. Clean the outside of the exhaust outlet and ensure that the outlet is round and free of irregularities. A misshapen outlet can cause the Fringe tip to encounter difficulties sliding into place due to the tight manufacturing tolerances.

Step 5: CAREFULLY slide the new Fringe Afterburner tip onto the exhaust outlet and ensure you slide it backwards evenly, watching to see that the mounting hardware lines up correctly with the slots in the exhaust outlet.

http://www.the370z.com/members/wheee...into-place.jpg

Step 6: Slide the tip back so that the inner tube is now flush with the exhaust outlet. Add one drop of loctite MEDIUM (blue) to the mounting bolts and thread them into the inside mounting weld nuts. Tighten the bolts firmly but not too much. The loctite will keep them from backing off.

Step 7: Repeat this same procedure for the other tip. Stand back and admire your work!

These are some extra angles for your viewing pleasure!

and this last one shows the furthest offset from the car possible... about 1/2 an inch further out than when mounted flush to the exhaust pipe outlet.

The total install time was less than an hour from start to finish. I took my time and was careful not to scratch the components during install or removal. I also added a light coat of wax to the new Fringe XVO Afterburners to keep them nice and shiny!

I hope you enjoy these one of a kind unique tips! Order yours in whatever colour combo you like from Fringe XVO!

I'm so glad I could help make this a reality!

I'm really hoping that the burnt tips work out as well. I can't, can't, CANT wait to get my hands on a set.

370Z JT 06-29-2013 01:29 AM

I don't know. Something doesn't look right. Maybe if they didnt stick out that much? Or maybe diameter of the tips are too big? Or maybe the finish of the tips?

But thumbs up if you dig it.

Yeahhhhhh... I agree with all those points...
Nothing does it for me

But :tiphat: if you like it

cv129 06-29-2013 11:09 AM

This looks fitting on a Veneno or maybe a Zonda.

wheee! 06-29-2013 12:08 PM

The finish can be changed to whatever combo you like. These tips are indeed massive, but in person they don't look too large. The are longer in the fact that they set INTO the car more than the HkS tips. These look larger because the do not have an angle cut as well.
I appreciate all the comments! Good and bad...

wheee! 07-03-2013 05:16 PM

added a few more pics to the second post....

JARblue 07-03-2013 05:20 PM

Nicely done sir :tiphat:

I really like the angle from almost straight back... like the exhaust has teeth in it's open mouth :yum:

wheee! 07-03-2013 05:23 PM

It's growing on me daily. I have been getting a lot of positive feedback from everyone that see's it in person. In hindsight, I think a darker gunmetal colour might be more dramatic for the outer finish, but I am loving the look..

FringeXVO 07-03-2013 08:30 PM

You CAN actually change it if you want. It would require drilling out and later replacing the rivets, but the tips are modular so you could remove the outers, have them recoated, then reassemble and reinstall them.

wheee! 07-03-2013 09:18 PM

I may do that one day! I have a local powder coater that does work like this. But right now I am digging the colour....!

Tips were a big hit in Calgary at the illMotion 2013 Sunday School event!

Body Kit in progress..... hope to make the tips stand out even more!

Quick test fit of the rear bumper and I am impressed! For all the naysayers about duraflex, this kit is very close to spot on! Can't wait to get it to the body shop!

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/21/7e9ehezy.jpg

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/21/ha6evu6a.jpg

Tips will get a fresh powder coat of satin black or gunmetal with the new body kit.

DEpointfive0 12-20-2013 08:27 PM

Can you really bend it and crap?

And where is the fitment NOT spot on?

wheee! 12-20-2013 10:31 PM

The FRP is not as pliable as urethane but that also means less sagging. It can be heated an manipulated.

The not spot on so far has been the front bumper has a quarter inch gap around the headlight on the passenger side. The hood needs adjusting at the hinges but otherwise is a perfect fit. The rear bumper is not mounted properly yet so it looks good but not 100% sure yet.

Well in duraflex advertisements they twist that shít and jump on it and like hit it with bats, lol

Can you post pics of the gaps and such just for future reference?

wheee! 12-21-2013 08:46 AM

In my journal already....

wheee! 12-23-2013 06:14 PM

Another shot of the tips and bumper. This is just before the tips went in for fresh powder coating after getting overheated on the track! Clearcoat and heat not a good combo! lol Tips are now Ceramic Coated and much better colour combo now I think!

Can you put those tips on stock?

wheee! 06-11-2014 07:24 AM

No. These are designed as bolt on tips for the HKS Hi-Power exhaust system. It has interchangeable tips.

wheee! 06-11-2014 07:26 AM

Having said that, Fringe can make tips similar to these that can be welded on too! Contact Fringe XVO for more info.

In case you're wondering how far the tips stick out from the bumper, I have a few pics. Keep in mind this is an amuse replica bumper too.

Straight on from the side view

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/14/rynujady.jpg

About 1.5" out total

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/14/ru5yhe7e.jpg

From top view almost flush

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/14/u3ajy8yn.jpg

From behind

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/14/eguzyper.jpg

Very modest poke really

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/14/e5etyhu5.jpg

Does not protrude further than overall car length

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/14/evu4ejap.jpg

Closeup goodness...:yum:
