Shift knob installation? Shift knob recommendations?
Hey guys I have a 6mt and I'm thinking about changing the shift knob to make the car look a little different. My questions are can I just unscrew the stock knob and screw the new one on? And what shift knob do you guys recommend? I kinda like the nismo carbon fiber shift knob or the nismo titanium shift knob. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

click link for steps on how to remove, but he makes it seem easier said than done lol. I've been trying for months but still can't get it off. Guess I need to eat more spinach. |
It's a real bitch to get the OEM knob off. Make sure you've got a strap wrench and locking pliers. Be prepared to swear at it for a while. The OEM knob may not survive the process.

Pineapples, I'm leaving the stock shift knob. I don't wanna be in mid twist and be like "Damn. Should've just left it on."
|
Just my experience - I used a strap wrench on mine and came off without too much fight

I've always liked the Nismo titanium shift knob. I have it on my 350Z and I'll more than likely get another one for the 370Z.

^^ True. As long as the knob is well protected, you should be fine. Though, I wouldn't use vice grips, maybe some regular adjustable pliers.

They need to lock, unless you want to struggle with both the pliers and strap wrench. It's hard enough to break the thread locker without making it harder than it has to be. I still don't know why Nissan would use any thread locker at all on a shift knob.

Stupid thing can't even grip the knob. Keeps slipping off so I gave up...for now :shakes head: |
I taped a rag tightly around the knob to give the strap wrench enough traction.

I was able to remove mine the first time with my bare hands. Not sure if it is the spinach salads or that I just got lucky and the guy (or robot) at Nissan was trying to save thread lock and when they (it) installed my the gear shift knob. The OEM one still looks like new. My wife hates the aftermarket knob I am using, so I swap it back to OEM when she wants to take the Z for a spin.

You got lucky. Mine was covered in thread locker.

Is it metal in addition to the cf? I'm in TX as well, and I'll never again have a metal shift knob.
|
It's a cylinder shape w/ metal on top and cf around the middle. Mostly cf.

I've got the same one, but all leather. It doesn't get hot at all. I'd stay away from one with metal on it.
