REQUEST: Footwell LED wiring DIY
 

I'm new to the modding and 370Z scene. I (finally!) got the car of my dreams this past week and I've got a huge project list ready to go. One of the more simple projects includes footwell lighting. I'm pretty decent when it comes to wiring and I can solder just about anything, but I'm not sure where I should wire the LED strips. I tried the Passenger Airbag light switch, which worked, but whenever I reconnect the switch to the OEM light, the LEDs go out.

I've done a lot of searching (here and other forums) but I just can't find a good DIY on this. Anyone looking to do this (or have done so already) that wouldn't mind creating a DIY? That or pm me with some instructions on exactly where I should wire the strips. I'd like them to turn on when the headlights turn on.

Just go with this. its cheap and easy. there are several DIY's in the forums to get your access to power in the Z.

Under dash lighting

I installed white LEDs under the dash when I installed the illuminating kick plates. But mine run off the kick plates so they only go on when my door opens. The easiest way would probably be to splice the power wire going to one of the outlets and then add a switch. I know its not going to turn on with your head lights but it is alot easier. You might be able to find the wire that goes from your head light switch to your head lights but that would be to much for me. Then again I am not a fan of me personally doing electrical things to my car.

If you want them to come on with your interior lights, just run a wire up your A-pillar and tuck it behind your headliner going to the overhead lights in the center. Pop all the regular interior lights out and the center housing and splice into the wires there.

You don't need to pull off the A-pillar or headliner either. Just use a screw driver to push the wire behind them. Run it down the molding by the door and down behind the carpet to your footwell lights. DONE!

i dont really use mine, but i wanted to populate the 3 center blanks with real switches so im running a red LED strip mounted under the seats. you can tap into the power from the power socket in the center console wire, or from the socket under the glove box. then wire up the switch.

i removed the power socket under the glove box on my car since i never use it. it's a good access point to feed my nuvi and other accessories.

Thanks for the responses everyone - I really appreciate all the ideas and feedback. I've tested the wiring in several places, just couldn't figure out the headlight portion.

Cbtech, it's funny that you mention wiring them up that way. When I couldn't find any information through the forums, I decided to tackle this myself. I located the fuse box and actually wired the LEDs straight into it, which worked like a charm. Thanks for the information!

I did mine with that exact kit LEDUB. I ran the wires up through the middle console and the remote is on the passenger side cubby behind the seat.

If your looking to use them as Day Time lights you can use the Yellow/Black on the cigarette lighter. It comes on during Acc.

The Factory Service Manual (FSM) will tell you which wires are powered up and when, wire colors, terminal positions, physical routing of harnesses/wires, &c. The FSM is a great resource for all 370Z owners that want to work on their car. Link to FSM download page is in my sig.

I wanted to add this to the post, my gages are hooked up to these two power wires in the main fuse box. One is a 15 the other is a 30 amp fuse depicted with a black mark on the side of the fuse. These power wires come on with the ACC. Also used the 12V cigarette lighter ground as my ground. These will work for your lights.

I just did a DIY the other day that gives you an interior power point that is switchable with the headlights. You might want to run a volt tester to see how much current is available but it runs the rear Fog light with no issues. and only takes 2 mins to get to.

Why didn't you wire them to the dome light so when the door shuts they go out with the regular dome light.
