DIY Low $ Muffler Delete
I originally devised this DIY as a low buck mod to improve the sound of my 370Z at the track. However, I think this could be used with anyone trying to develop any type of system intended to replace the stock muffler that does not have the ability to weld.
WARNING: Anyone attempting this DIY should be prepared to deal with a sheared exhaust flange stud. Please, just assume that you will shear at least one stud in the process. If the stud shears while you are attempting to loosen it you will need to drill it out from the bottom. Make sure that you have a full set of sharp drill bits. Use a punch and create a notch as close to the center of the back of the stud as possible. Now put on some safety glasses and start drilling with a small bit until you get through the stud. Then just keep stepping up the size of the bits until you can insert a bolt to replace the stud. However, if the four exhaust flange nuts come off without shearing please apply ample amounts of anti-seize compound to the studs. In my humble opinion, the greatest aspect of this DIY is finding the Walker exhaust flange repair kit part # 36130. This completely opens up the possibility of developing a muffler delete that bolts directly to the flanges without the need for welding. They retail for $15 each at RockAuto and $20 at AutoZone. With this part, the sky is the limit. Feel free to use mandrel bends, glass packs, or whatever. Just use your imagination. As you see, my set up is the bare bones lowest $ setup. However, this is something that anyone can do with parts available at the local AutoZone. And the sound is insane! Initially, I attempted a setup that exited the car just as the stock exhaust did. However, this setup utilized flex pipe that I found to be a weak link. In the end, I just connected two sets of 45 degree angle pipe (again, available at any auto parts store). Keep in mind, that you should purchase your pipe from the same type of store as different stores pipes don't match up. This resulted in the end of the pipes angling down toward the exhaust cutouts in the bumper. Is this setup pretty? No. Although, when painted flat black the pipes are not very noticeable. In the end, you can create a set of muffler deletes for around $70 that can be swapped on and off in around 20 minutes (please apply plenty of anti-seize every time you un-bolt them). Who could hate on this?

I just got done doing my own muffler deletes, but I salvaged the stock tips and welded them onto the deletes! I hope to get more of these made and my supplier has tips that look like the stock ones. My idea is to sell them on the forum for cheap; if people show an interest.

A muffler delete mod that includes the muffler…try and wrap your head around that one… And for god’s sake don’t you see what is popping out of my fog light opening? Yes, that is a trailer hitch receiver. Do you really think I care about what my pipes look like?

I have not had a track day since early November. I am like a junkie having the withdrawals.
