Fly1Motorsports RS1 Install!!! & OEM Fender Removal
Hi everyone,
I have noticed a lot of inquiries about the OEM fender removal in conjunction with the Fly1Motorsports RS1 Fenders. If you like this DIY and would like to order a set there is a link is in my signature. This install is actually very easy. It can be done over a weekend just messing around for a couple hours here and there (one day if your not busy). Note I have a lot of extra parts removed from my car right now so if you see something missing from my pics that was not mentioned, don't worry, you do not have to remove it. Quick disclaimer before we get started: :tiphat: I am not a mechanic nor do I imply to be one. All work done to your vehicle is done at your own risk and I will not be held accountable for any damages. Tools required for job: Ratchet Ratchet Extension 10mm Socket Philips Screw Driver Flat Head Screw Driver Needle Nose Pliers I am providing links to the front bumper removal, headlight, and side skirt removal. Two are great DIY's already provided by DIGI so there is no reason for me to re-write them. Please provide REP for him as well. First remove the front wheels, and front bumper/front half of the fender liner. The fender liner is not part of this DIY but it is self explanatory once you look at it. Link ---> Digi's Front Bumper Removal You can take out the rear half of the fender liner now, or when you get to the skirts. Second remove the headlights. Link ---> Digi's Headlight Removal Third remove the side skirts. Link ---> Z1 Motorsports Side Skirt PDF Remove the second half of the fender liner now if you did not in the beginning. Now the fun part (if the skirts were not fun enough :icon17:)! Remove the rubber weather strip to expose the bolts underneath. I didn't picture all of the clips you can see what needs to be removed very easily. http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN3296.jpg Next remove the plastic bumper hanger, it will be needed on the new fenders. http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN3295.jpg Next begin to remove all of the bolts holding the fender to the car. http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN3294.jpg http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN3297.jpg To get the remaining two loose you need to open the door all the way and use the extension! The one on top I loosen but leave in to hold the fender to the car. It is slotted so does not need to be completely removed. http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN3298.jpg http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN3299.jpg Do not pull to far away from the body because you need to remove the wire harness clip for the side blinker. Use the needle nose pliers on the clip it comes off very easy. http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN3300.jpg Now remove any factory clips to re-use on the new fenders. Rinse and repeat for the next side. 10/28/12 Ok here is the extended version. It is really, REALLY, hard to capture in a picture this step by step. I am posting some basic photos and tips to help you along the way. If you have any questions, post them here! That is what this thread is for! This will help save you a bunch of money on install costs because this is a labor intensive job. Addition Tools Required: Drill Drill Bits Misc. Sizes Dremel Dremel Accessories Masking Tape (Optional) Wood Shims (Optional) Extra Person! (Optional) Safety Equipment!!! Ear Plugs Goggles Face Mask First thing I do is pop a couple holes to scab on the fender. I used two on top and one at the bottom (your choice really). You can clearly see mold marks where the factory holes would be (pictured below). I know not every car is the same but this gets you started without racking your brain for no reason. Take a pick, get yourself a couple holes and get started! P.S my picture below shows mold marks, and then after I drilled them out. I did not take a picture of the holes I used to scab it on. http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN3405.jpg Here is a photo of them cut out. I used a small drill bit to center my hole, then a larger one to the right size. For the square holes I use a dremel with a bit (pictured below) that cuts from the side, but also drills straight thru. http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN3407.jpg http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN3404.jpg At this point it is just a matter of finesse and move a little this way, that way, etc. You will also see if you can use all the mold marks for your holes. I am pretty sure you can use them all, because I have twice now. The most you have to do is make a longer hole (not wider) so the fender can slide forward and back freely. I used tape down the door line to help avoid chipping or scratching it. Here are some pictures of my finesse lol. http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN3398.jpg http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN3397.jpg http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN3396.jpg http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN3395.jpg http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN3394.jpg http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN3393.jpg http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN3410.jpg http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSCN3409.jpg I do not really have much more to add then that. I got them both fitted in about 5-6 hours. Don't be afraid to try this on your own, it is fun, and rewarding! If you have any questions let me know! Also I do not have all of my parts to line them up perfectly, but I can tell I have the adjustment to do it once I get my parts back. Just thought I would put that out there for anyone the is eye raping some of the gaps lol. |
Sweet thanks, looks like more work than I'm willing to do!! Thanks for posting this. I will have their shop install!!

:iagree: Good DIY can't wait for the rest.. Your a pro at this!! :driving:
|
Awesome now we just need install pics of the fenders :yum:
|
awesome diy.. for those side blinker.. i think u can remove them as the first step and unclip them... rather than doing it at as the very last step... i believe you just slide them to one side and pull... check manual...
|
That may be the case, im not sure. When I took them off the previous car I was not able to do that, so I did not try on this one. There are two spots you have to push in at the same time.

This has really motivated me to start doin this myself. My fenders have been sitting in the living room for more than a month now and wife keeps reminding my every day that our house is not a garage.
|
I know how that goes. In the past I let parts sit so long I ended up selling them for a loss. I'm glad you guys are enjoying watching the progress.

Check back soon I will be updating with finished product.

Ok guys. I just finished installing one of my UAM vented fenders and it was pretty straight forward (thanks to this write-up).
The only thing different, I didn't remove the bumper or the headlights. I just removed the bolt that holds the bumper to the fender and pulled it back a little bit to gain access to the fender bolts that are below the headlight. I then removed the rear top bolt by the door instead of just loosening it like stated. This allowed me to pull the fender out from the rear. This way the fender at the front came off of the headlight without removing it. It saved a couple of steps. Now....the side skirt was another story. The clips are on there tight. I left the clips off when I reinstalled due to the fact I'm replacing them in about 3 weeks with some BSD skirts. Also, you can remove side turn signal before removing fender. It pops out very easily with a small flat head screw driver. It fits carefully between the light and the fender on both sides. Came right out... |
Dont judge my horrible stance people still adjusting my coilovers. New wheels are also on the way....so this is just to display the fenders haha
http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSC_0034.jpg http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...p/DSC_0035.jpg I will post better pics soon. |
Im also going to get a couple pics when my front wheels are off again of how I cut the rear half of the fender liner. I could not make myself leave it out. I made kind of a cut that looks like this [ (that would be the driver side).
|
NICE! I wonder what these fenders would look like color matched all the way, no black
|
Im sure they would look just as sexy. I bet someone could do a quick Photoshop of that real quick.

Sorry car is so dirty, I'll have more pics another week been too busy going to the track the last few months!!
Huge thumbs up to fly1motorsports, I had these bad *** fenders sitting in my room for months and just got them installed by them! Couldn't be happier, just need to finish the wrap! --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=34.157712,-118.465740 |
Excuse the wheels etc lol, need to go to the dealer so removed my recaro seats and wheels!!
I forgot to mention, I have tested them to 140/145mph (closed road offcourse!) held up great with no problems!! --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=34.157783,-118.465380 |
Martin what wing do you have? Fenders look great!
Edit: I think it is the Nismo wing but it looks different without anything else Nismo. |
you guys! your cars look great! for real!
|
Thanks! I hope to have some pro shots taken by the end of the year once this phase of mods are complete.
|
sorry to jack your thread lol!. The wing is a seibon CF somewhat replica of the nismo.
Mr&Mrs, does your front mud guard scrape at all? After a few high speed tests mine need to be clipped on better but my car is super low. |
Dont worry about going off course I started it! I thought it was the nismo but couldnt really tell.
In the pictures posted above they were rubbing the entire time I was driving. It was only 2" or less off of the gound though. Im at 3.5" right now and they are about 1/2-1" off of the ground and only scrape when I hit a bump. |
I'm at about 2" or so, the liner itself drops at high speed for me...
|
Think you could make a few vent holes and put some mesh over it to keep debris out? Mine is screwed into the lip and also has like 3-4 push clips in it, so it is not going anywhere.
|
Here is one last pic for this thread. More can be found in my build thread, and the
Fly1Motorsports thread. Both links can be found in my signature. Any questions or comments post here or send me a PM. http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSC_0236.jpg |

A little trouble w/ Install
5 Attachment(s)
I attached a few pictures after the install. The fender liner did not fit up so we drilled out a bit. Also the corners didn't quite match up. Don't really know if it looks like a big deal, but I'm kinda picky so opinions are appreciated! I'll post better pictures once I wash the car! :)
|
I cut my fender liners a tad different, I was still able to use the very bottom screw to attach it to the skirt. I am not sure about the CF version but my fiberglass set did not have a spot to remount the hardware for the screw that goes in the corner of the bumper. I just hot glued a piece of wood there and poped a small self tapper into it.
|
Subd, hopefully doing this in about a month :)
