I've read absolutely every post on this thread. Now you can call it lack of sleep or stupidity but I'm completely lost. All these words are just confusing the s*** out of me. I'm a visual learner and I have absolutely no experience with wiring of any sort. I ordered the jdm version and I want it to be on when my headlights are on and I also want it to function as a brake light(if that makes any sense). Someone please point me In a general direction. More than willing to rep anyone that helps. Thanks in advance.

the JDM version comes with a single filament bulb 7440, and thus it always looks like the light is "braking" when it is on.
if you want it on as a parking light when driving, and brighter when you hit the brakes... then you have to obtain a dual filament light bulb harness 7443 to achieve this. there's pictures of the general install on the first page of this thread, and if you search my posts i explain how i did it with a Lexus IS300 brake lightbulb harness. |

Here's a write up I did recently on how to achieve this by modifying the fog light assembly and wiring diagram. Rear Foglight - Running light AND brake light

I have an 09 sport/touring and was a little confused on the wiring once I had the fog light installed since the wire colors didn't match what I had read in this thread. Since my car had the plugged off wire to the fog light I used that and traced that inside to where it junctions into the harness for the brakes. Then I found that all I needed to do to act like a 4th brake light was connect the orange fog light wire to the light blue brake wire. One wire install FTMFW!!

This is good if you want to use it as a fourth brake light, but it makes it ineffective as a fog light until you are braking. Three brake lights is enough for me

OK, put my Z1 Motorsports light in today connected as 4th brake light.
Mechanical: The lower and upper nuts on the cosmetic piece I hit with WD-40 *my PB Blaster was at home. The lower nut - of course - came loose very easily. The upper nut I had to cut in half with a Dremel wheel. So, then all was very easy after that. Electrical: The thick orange wire in the harness was the Fog light, and instead of a green wire for brakes, I had like a baby blue, NOT green. So, I tied the Baby Blue wire and the large Orange wire together connected and closed up. One item of note: The wire gauge of the Baby Blue wire (which feeds both brake lights in parallel) was about half the gauge of the Fog Light Orange wire. I didn't measure any serious voltage drop after connecting the Fog light but I measured the Fog Light today on the test bench with about 14 volts and current draw was about ~2 Amps. I haven't heard of any issues with doing this mod with overcurrent in any harness wire so I'll take it on faith (this mod has been done since 2009) that it's OK in the end. 4th brake light looks awesome, and considering the minor effort to install a big thumbs up to all who left such great instructions for us! |

Do you have to use a heat source on the locktite nut? Other DIYs for this rear brake light mention a blow torch to melt it, while in this one you didnt use it. Do you just have to be careful and slow or do you HAVE TO use a heat source?

I have read all variations on the nut/bolt scenarios, some came loose carefully and easily, some had to heat a little (be careful the bumper is plastic and you're close to a lot of gasoline)! I had to use a dremel tool to cut the nut off of one of my bolts on the stock light.
