DIY 370z Emblem Removal

Hi Guys, I've been surfing the forum for a little bit now, and realized there was no DIY for this, at least that I could find, so I figured I would post one since I just finished doing this earlier today. Not really a big deal, but I figured it may help someone that's scared to try it.

Here are the tools I used - a flathead I had to pad with the sock to get some of the stubborn stickiness off.

I started of by trying to let some Goo Gone soak down behind the emblem...I didn't apply a whole lot here, so I'm not sure exactly how effective this was...

Then I got some floss...

http://i.imgur.com/JVbthl.jpg

and started Flossin' on 'em...:icon17:

this is just the glue/tape/sticky stuff that was leftover...

Removing the glue/tape/sticky stuff with sock and Goo Gone

Edit: I did have to use a flathead screwdriver, buffered by a sock with Goo Gone on it to gently scrape some of the more stubborn glue off here. At this point, my girlfriend who took the flossing pic, was laid out tanning, so I couldn't get a pic of this, sorry.

almost there...

Finished product

but up close, I have the "Reverse PW Ghost 370z" emblem...I kinda like it, but am hoping it will go away after having some time to bake in the sun

now to find somewhere for this...

and since I gave her a bath while doing this, one more...

I hope someone finds this useful in their quest to make their Z their own.

Just added this because I thought it was a cool shot that my gf took while she was tanning...

Getting ready to swap mine out for black chrome in the next couple of days.

Oh, I didn't see any pics of tanning girlfriend. 'sup with that? :icon17:

Looks great. I always remove badging on my vehicles. Most of my customers want them removed as well. You need to polish the area now. If the badging has been on the car for several years, wet sanding is usually needed. This should only be dome by a professional.

Z34Driver 06-17-2012 09:16 AM

Thanks NXTAZEE, I always do the same thing, just looks much cleaner IMO. I would like to have the burgers shaved too, but I'll probably put cash towards many other mods before this one.

It's been on there since the first owner bought it from the dealer I suppose. I just picked the car up in early April of this year. I was going to try applying some Nu-Finish to the area today to see if it helped any. If not, I worked at a few car washes along the "come-up" haha, and still have friends in the detailing game that I can get in touch with to help me out.

If you wet sand it with 3000 grit paper and buff it ,it will come right out.

Z34Driver 06-18-2012 08:18 AM

Thanks for the tip! I'll see if I can find a local place this week.

It's crazy, I drove from Athens down 316E to 285W to Vinings, Ga, then to Powder Springs, Ga yesterday, then back up I-20 to 285E to 85N all the way to Jefferson, Ga, and down 129 back into Athens. Never saw another 370 on the road anywhere

I did see an STi...next to me for a few seconds, before he was behind me...

Depends on how long they've been on. If the paint has been faded, sanding won't work.

I work in a body shop with the right stuff it works.

Instead of using a screw driver and sock which could lead to damage to the paint; I would recommend baking the remaining residue under the sun and just rub it fingers.

3m makes adhesive remover that you spray it on and the double sided tape turns to goo it comes right off.

:iagree:

Both are better methods of removing the glue/double sided tape. I was very, very, very careful when doing this and luckily I caused no damage.

where to reattach this emblem suitable

muzik212 06-29-2012 06:07 PM

Thanks for the DIY. I pulled by front burger today and used a 350 version with some carbon fiber. I still don't love it but its better then the stock version.

Nice write up man! Saw that you live in Athens. That's cool. I live in Jefferson, and my wife works at Athens Regional.

Here is another suggestion. To remove the tape residue, you can soften and loosen the adhesive by using water, plastic and the heat under the sun.

First, cut a 4 x 9 inch piece of plastic garbage bag. Use the thicker plastic if possible.
Second, spray the tape residue and surrounding area with water.
Third, place the plastic piece over the tape residue and seal the perimeter by running your fingers around it.
Fourth, park your care under the sun and let it bake under the sun for about 30 minutes.

The trapped heat generated under the plastic will loosen the adhesive and make it easy to peel without using any harmful chemicals or a screw driver wrapped in a sock. The same technique is used to remove tint from your windows.

Hands Down! BEST method, period!

:iagree: I just used this method to remove my 370z badge this past weekend. With the 101 temp it worked like a charm!

Thanks, I do live in Athens. I have been at Athens regional frequently lately, following my accident. I saw someone up here about a week ago, in a Brilliant Silver 370, with black wheels. Once in front of Athens regional, and once again on Commerce Rd.

:iagree: Yeah the screwdriver wasn't the best method, I guess I'll get to retry this now since my Z is totaled :(.

Gilianz 07-20-2012 02:42 PM

I'm new to the Z community got my 11' Monterey Blue last monday and am wondering what you would have to do to recolor the emblems flat black and put them back on. Thanks in advanced :)

Z34Driver 07-20-2012 02:54 PM

Nice, congrats on the Z. I have not personally done it, but have seen a few members on the forum that have used Plasti-dip to do this without taking the emblems off of the car.

removing front emblem?

Hi,
did you guys use goo gone also to remove the front nissan logo front bumper? I have a black Z one i want to put in place.

Thanks

Snakeboy 07-30-2016 06:26 PM

I added a black Z emblem yesterday. I left the vehicle in the sun for about an hour (100+ degrees). Attempted to use fishing line but that cut into my hands so I tried an inner strand of paracord and it work great. Took about 10 minutes to complete most of which was getting the old adhesive off (used Goo-Gone).
