Just Finished - Viper 4704 - Remote start!
After weeks of countless hours – I finally got my 2-Way Viper 4704 remote start up and running. First I’ll say – to all of those warnings and issues people speak about auto starting a 6-speed manual 370’s are not wholly valid. Some simple relays and tapping into the sensors the car already has – and there is simply no way that car is going to start in gear.
Three things must happen for the car to start: > Hood closed > Safety Brake on > Trans in neutral If any of the three are not correct, she won’t start. Additionally there’s a smartly installed unit switch that disables the autostart so if you need to pass the car to someone else (mechanic) it’s easy enough to simply disable it to keep them from playing with it. Additionally using a relay I have the clutch engagement the same as it would be for OEM starting. So the car functions exactly the way it was designed with the proximity key, in that the clutch needs to be fully engaged to start. But the autostart will temporarily bypass the clutch to allow it to start. I even installed the missing remote hatchback release via the wireless pod. Last thing I did was design a temporary proximity key bypass. So now I only need to carry one pod with me (I no longer need to carry both pods). I can autostart it; if someone gets in and tries to drive away the engine will die (and the start button is disabled). But if I press an additional AUX on my pod, it will temporarily engage the proximity key allowing me to press the start button and drive as normal. Best of all, if the car dies while driving due to a overly aggressive clutch pop, the start button still works as normal until I purposely shut down the car; at which time the proximity key ‘disappears’. I’m working on documenting the install now. |

I'm about quarter way through the docs.
I decided to re-approach the 'phantom' key this weekend. The way I was able to do it now w/ a simple latched relay is upon hitting AUX1 on the remote control, it gives me 15 seconds to engage the ignition. After the 15 seconds the key disappears. So I can open the doors via the Viper pod, enter the car, and press AUX1 on the Viper pod to get a key to magically ‘appear’. If for some reason I decide to walk away without starting the car, the key will disappear shortly thereafter. Once the Z is started (either with the Viper pod or the standard ignition push button), the key will continue to be there through the entire life cycle of the on ignition. (in case she stalls). Once the Z is turn off AND either door opens, the key once again disappears. Then finally – just in case I don’t have the pod or it gets damaged – there’s a super secret momentary push button that is not accessible unless you have an intimate understanding of where it is that will also start the 15 second timer. This will allow for emergency push-button starting. The units I used were the Viper 4704 2-way w/ 1 mile range, and the DBALL bus controller plus a total of 3 standard 12v SPST relays. Docs to follow. |

Drum roll . . .
As promised, I am attaching the installation documents. Frankly I'm not sure what was harder, the install, or documenting it. Anyhow, start with the document: 2012_370Z_4704V_Install_Notes. Then the other documents will support that. In general, I suggest printing everything and have them available while working - if you are like me, you will be marking them up and making additional notes.
I'm open to feedback, if anyone would like additional notes or updates, just let me know. If anyone needs some one-on-one inspiration - feel free to PM me. I'll be happy to cheer you on. Good luck! 2012_370Z_4704V_Install_Notes.pdf Custom_Quick_Reference_Guide.pdf Custom_370Z_DBall_Install_Guide.pdf Programming_Detail.PDF |

Great write up on the viper install. I'm currently trying to put in a viper 5904, but am having trouble with the wiring. Though I don't have the clutch bypass and RFID key bypass, when i clutch in and have the key, the starter cranks, but the engine doesn't start. This is my first alarm/rs install and your diagram has taken alot of the guesswork out. The ign 1 and starter wires on the 24 pin harness aren't connected, (thinking it was redundant to the 8 pin harness), so when I get a chance I'm going to connect those and see if that solves my problem.
EDIT: My 5904 has a 10 pin harness instead of 8 pin for the r/s. It has a Starter output and ignition 2 output that I've connected to relays to change their polarity according to the DBALL install manual. I'm going to have the same ("redundant") outputs on the 24 pin harness connected to these and see where it takes me. Last edited by slynx; 08-26-2012 at 06:39 AM.
