DIY: Tips on Installing K&N Typhoon CAI
I search the forum couple times but couldn't find a thread regarding the installation of K&N Typhoon.
After installing the system myself this afternoon, I found the installation is pretty straight forward and simple, especially the filters are fitted inside the engine bay instead of behind the bumper. Therefore, this thread is more likely on some tips on the installation that can make the process easier. 1) Preparation, I will suggest a read-through on the instruction, it gives you a concept and big-picture on what does the installation is like and which components you have to remove, so you have an idea on what you are going to do. 2) Beside follow the instruction from Step(1) to Step(42), you can finish some steps prior to the actual installation, here are those steps: -Step(15), (16) and (17), also Step(29), (30) and (31) These six step are preparation procedures for the Heat-Shield, you can have these done first therefore the shield is ready-to-go. Regarding putting the trim onto the shield, you can cut them with regular scissor, with some tight corner, just push it in, they might pop off towards the end of the trim, don't worry about it, they will stay in place eventually. -Step(19) and (22), also Step(33), (36) These four steps are preparation procedures for both intake tubes. Pay attention on (19) and (33), the plastic 90npt vent(Part F) is screw-into the intake tube, however, it is very tight thus very difficult to screw in, you might want to unscrew it while it is half way in, clean up some plastic flakes and screw in again, you don't need to screw all the way into the tube but at least only a few tread left, also, make sure the open-side of the vent is pointing towards the engine. For Step(22) and (36), DO NOT tighten the screws to the tightest, as tight as you can still use some force to move the mounting-bracket. If you make it too tight, you are going to have trouble when mount the bracket onto the heat-shield. -Step (24) It's s simple step, just put the two rubber hose onto the 90vent, you may cut the hoses into 3" each, but I will suggest you can trim them during the actual installation. Those above are the steps you can do first prior to the actual installation. The following are the tips during the actual installation: -Step(1) Disconnect the -ve terminal, you can do that, you may not, I did not disconnect the terminal. BUT, I am NOT suggesting you don't need to, if you choose not to disconnect the terminal, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN RISK. If you want to play safe, PLEASE DISCONNECT THE TERMINAL AS INSTRUCTED. -Step(5) Don't worry, you need to use some force to pull out the air-box, just be careful don't scratch your hand by the surrounding metal components. -Step(8) Remove the OEM intake hose AND all the connected smaller-hoses, you cannot reach the bottom spring-clamp right away, therefore you have to remove the top small hose first and you take out the intake-hose, then you have enough room to remove the hose which is connected to the engine. -Step(11) Remove the driver's side air-box is tricky, try to push the intake-hose all the way back so the hose comes off from the air-box, you have to push hard because the hose is stiff. ***Somepeople will remove the towerbar, if you do so, it will make Step(8) & (11) easier to complete, especially for Step(11), you can probably remove the intake-hose and the air-box together in one shot, but it is really an option, because these two step can complete w/o removing the towerbar. -Step(13) Make sure remove the driver's side intake-hose with its attached components, you don't need those 'plastic-boxes' on the K&N intake hose. -Step(14) & (28) Use the smaller hose-clamp, I believe the illustration on the front page of instruction have Part A and Part C reversed. -Step(23) I hope your hand is not fat or big, otherwise you might have problem putting the screws behind the intake-hose mounting-bracket. You can try this if you really have problem putting the screw in place: Prior to put the intake-tube in place, insert the mounting-screw(Part L) to the mounting bracket and stable it with a piece of tape. -Step(25) Connect the 90vent hose to the intake-tube and do a test-fit, then you decide how much you have to trim the crank-case-vent-hose. -Step(38) The crank-case-vent-hose is 7", however, it is too long, same as (25), do a test fit and trim the hose to a proper length. That's it, after Step(38), everything is very straight-forward bolt-on, and you are good to go. Please reply or PM me if you have any question, I will try my best to help you out. I was a bit surprised at first because most of the CAI increase the response on higher end of rpm, but I pay more attention on the recent drives, both city and HWY, it does have a better response at that range. Engine note wise, it does enhance the breathing sound, not too much, don't expect something very noticeable, but it does sound better. It's true that it takes some miles before the ECU adjust the A/F mixture to bring out the potential of the system. |

I like it. Took a few days for me to feel any throttle response. But it def has a different sound when u floor it and it rides a lot smoother too. What other mods do u have right now?

to you bud!!
Yea, it does take about 7 to 10 days to have the ECU adjust to the new intake, and the power gain from 3k rpm and up is quite obvious. I installed the ARK Grip last month, sounds awesome!! Deep but not loud, burnt tip does look very very nice. Other stuffs are more exterior, spoiler, wheels (having a new set on its way tho), white LED plate and doom light, shift knobs, kenwood HU.. I will suggest exhaust worth it's money very good. |

Yeah I heard the ark grip video on YouTube. Sounded good. How much is that goin for if u don't mind me asking? I was thinking I might go with the new top speed exhaust. Looks pretty good and sounds pretty good too. Not too pricey either.

Thanks. When the time comes to buy an exhaust I'll let u know. $1200 is a lot to me right now. That's the only reason I was leaning towards top speed. Only $550 shipped. But who knows what'll happen in the next couple months. If you can could u get a video of your exhaust for me?

Regular tools and wrenches for auto purpose is fine... I prefer short-ram thus easy to install and filters cleaning in the future.(no need to take off the bumper again...) |

Hey did u ever get any hissing noises after u installed it? I keep hearing this hissing noise and I don't know if it's the intakes or what. It's aggravating.
