AAM Competition Short Tail Exhaust DIY
Just got the Shorty Tails from UPS today, install took me over an hour, it was snowing a little and it was hella cold, typically it shouldn't take that long at all.
No one wrote one up yet, I guess it's because this is such an easy install.. But oh well, in case someone wants a picture of how it's done, I have one. Tools needed: Sockets: 10mm, 12mm, 14mm Wrenches: 10mm, 12mm, 14mm (Some places are hard to reach without wrenches) Breaker bar: Helps out a lot. The exhausts are nicely packed by AAM, they provided the bolts, but I didn't use them because I was too lazy to remove the original ones rusted on the pipes. http://www.the370z.com/members/leeye...e44576-box.jpg Next is to get your Z up in the air somehow, I personally used ramps. http://www.the370z.com/members/leeye...44579-ramp.jpg Remove the following bolts: http://www.the370z.com/members/leeye...580-remove.jpg The muffler is held on by 3 of the rubber things (don't know what they are called), you must remove the 3 bolts on all of them, except the 3rd one has 1 bolt. Here is a picture of them when the muffler is out. http://www.the370z.com/members/leeye...2-dsc-5944.jpg Picture when the muffler is still on the car, hard to get the shot... http://www.the370z.com/members/leeye...1-dsc-5939.jpg Third one... http://www.the370z.com/members/leeye...3-dsc-5941.jpg Now you should be able to remove the muffler without much trouble. With the help from a friend would be nice, but I did it on my own from behind the bumper, NOT under the car. You will need to remove the rubber holding on to the muffler. I didn't know if there was a easier way, but I kinda just forced them out and then I forced them into the Short Tails. http://www.the370z.com/members/leeye...4-dsc-5946.jpg Bolt them back on to the car, then you are done! http://www.the370z.com/members/leeye...5-dsc-5945.jpg http://www.the370z.com/members/leeye...6-dsc-5949.jpg |
thats cool! does it add power?
|
i would imaine that i've lost some lower end torque due to the lack of back pressure. its really just for the amazing sound than power gain lol
|
How do you like the sound now?
|
loving it!!! Very deep throaty sound below ~3500rpm, and super race car like high pitch above ~4500rpm. Between 3500 and 4500 omg drone lol
|
Just got mine installed and holy crap its loud as hell!!!! I hope it tones down a bit over time or.I'm going back to stock lol.
|
thank you for the write up!!
don't forget to add the removal of the emission canister heat shield, held on by 3 10mm bolts this will need to come off for perfect fitment! A lot of people contacting me about fitment issues, and they skip this step. After the removal of the heat shield, everything will fit the way it should! |
Yah I removed it. Forgot to add it on here lol

I found that a propylene or propane torch is needed, I had 12.5K miles when I installed and I couldn't crack them without some good heat cycling.
I didn't even know a DIY existed, I thought it was simple enough to understand (no offense). FYI, the rubber things are exhaust hangers. Quote:

Well there are even diys for removing bumpers, changing doom lights so i figured why not.
