Here is my method for changing the 370Z’s oil since I have the Sport Package………….I own a floor hydraulic jack. I swapped out the jack’s contact plate with an optional slotted insert ($5 @ CARQUEST) that mirrors the Nissan part # S-NT001 (Safety Stand Attachment) from the service manual page GI-30. This insert has a shaft like the original contact plate and slides into the jack’s arm. I jack up the car and then place my regular steel wheel ramp under the wheel! Ditto for the other side. Very simple…………

I already bought all the items listed by AK but there's a reminder on the Redline motor oil bottlr that we allow 3000 miles... I so wanted to change to ester base but my Z is only at 400 miles... anyway, can I change oil this early? thanks in advance

I personally wouldn't change oil at 400 miles. That's too early. Nissan recommends 3750 miles for your 1st oil change. Yes, I agree it's a bit too late. I changed around 2000 miles (1st oil change). Drove another 1800 miles on regular oil (Nissan Ester synthetic blend) Then I switched to Redline full synthetic. Please read below for some old quotes....

Very good question. Nissan USA want you to take your car in for the first oil change at 3750 miles. I personally think that's way too long (for the first oil change). There are simply too many particles flowing around that can damage the internals. So, I did my first oil change at 2000 miles with regular oil at the dealer.

You should wait till at least 3000 miles before switching to synthetic (I switched at 3800 miles). Again some members here switched as early as 1200 miles but it's recommended to wait about 3000 miles.

Hey Leepeen, I have just walked outside my house (it's 2:55 AM) to get to my shed to get the Redline bottle so that I can show you the pic!



As you can see, they want you to wait at least 3,000 miles (I did around 3800. Semtex, wstar I believe did the same 4-5K miles). Even though few will say that the rings will seal properly within 20 miles of driving, but some still believe you should use factory oil to seal the rings properly and drive 3-5K miles. But there were members who changed/switched to synthetic within 1200 miles (if that makes you feel better). I am still an old school follower who follows everything by book.

I like redline because it's a good oil. They use good stuff just like Motul. But I didn't pick Motul because I don't track my car. Motul is labeled as racing oil where Redline has two different oil - one is regular synthetic (which is what I have) and the other is Racing Synthetic. Racing oils tend to lack the important detergents to keep the engine clean on daily driven cars. If you'll be tracking your car a lot (like Semtex, RCZ or Travis) go with Motul or Redline Racing oil. If you are going to drive street/highway 90% of the time go Redline Synthetic or Amsoil.

In the world of motorsport, Targa rallies are unique in the way they punish the vehicle and driver equally. Steve Millen knows a thing or two about road racing, as the world-renown driver was the IMSA GTO Champion in a twin turbocharged 300ZX in 1992 and ’94. Fifteen years later, his Costa Mesa, California-based company called Stillen still has close ties to Nissan. When Millen pitched Nissan for a new GT-R to campaign the 2009 Targa Newfoundland, Nissan executives happily obliged.

The annual tarmac rally, now in its 7th year and set to run September 12-19, begins and ends in the city of St. John's on the island of Newfoundland and draws nearly 200,000 spectators. “The Targa” is held over a 2200-kilometer course (about 1370 miles) on the paved roads around the island of Newfoundland. Each team consists of a driver and navigator, neither of whom is allowed to study maps of the course or drive the streets prior to the event.

Each “stage” is essentially a daily race against the clock, where competitors attempt to drive through unknown territory at maximum velocity without crashing or destroying anything mechanical and attempting to hit their target time assigned by Targa organizers.

THE GAMEPLAN
The Stillen team contacted a key group of partners to help campaign what many consider the most technologically advanced supercar in the world: the 2009 Nissan GT-R. Road & Track Magazine Road Test Editor Mike Monticello signed on as navigator. Millen then approached Red Line Oil for technical support, a natural fit since the speed merchant already sells these products to his Nissan and Infinity road car customers.


Prior to track testing at El Toro Air Station, Red Line’s ester-synthetic 0W40 Motor Oil and other products were swapped poured in for performance and reliability.


Millen mentioned Nissan’s preference for an ester-based motor oil, leading Red Line chemists to confirm that its latest 0W40 Motor Oil would both match Nissan’s viscosity requirements and would do a better job in the varying rally conditions than even a Red Line racing oil that is designed to work in a more specific range. Not only this motor oil for road cars stand up to the brutal conditions of the Targa Newfoundland, but that it exceeds the properties of the car’s factory-recommended oil (which is not ester-based).

"In rallying, reliability is critical," Millen explains. "It takes reliable acceleration, high lateral grip and good brakes rather than all-out power in a race like this. We avoided making major modifications to the engine because Nissan designed a fantastic powerplant and we needed it to stay together. We added a little boost, revised the exhaust for better flow, and changed all the fluids to Red Line synthetic for maximum protection. Not having to worry about the motor staying together allows Mike and I to concentrate on the course and hitting our target times, and with Red Line in the car we know all the fluids exceed factory specs."

I just did an oil change and the oil filter looks small the k&n filter is that the right size?

Default chin spoiler/deflector hit the ramps

[FONT="Garamond"]I have 1850 miles on my CY Touring Sport/6MT. I had planned to do my first oil change today but am having trouble with the front air deflectors and chin spoiler hitting the ramp. I am using the Petersen Tru-Cut ramps witht the extension kit (Car Ramps, Truck Ramps and Extensions). The highest point of the inside and outside lip of the ramps appears to be 9 inches high. First the air deflectors hit the lips of ramps. I removed them and tried again and the chin spoiler hit the ramps. I placed a 2x4 under the rear base of the ramp to lower the approach angle of the chin spoiler but it still hit.

Are there any ramps anyone is using that works smoothly without hitting spoiler or having to remove deflectors? I have seen Rhino ramp mentioned. Is it lower than the Petersen or have a longer approach? I don't want to take the Z to dealer for a change.

I change my oil at 1487 no problems so far. Car seems alot quieter

Default Oil change technique

I changed my 370Z with sport package at approx. 3500 miles this weekend. I was able to slide my oil catch can under My 379Z without jacking up the front end and was able to spin off the oil filter with a rubber glove. I went with Redline oil (5w-30) and a carquest (made by WIX)

Car is much quieter and shifting is so much smoother now after the oil change.

I used redline at 1400 miles and I am now at 1600 miles with no issues.

ak, thanks for the writeup. did you remove your front spoiler to get the car on the ramps? i dont think i see it in the video. just curious.

hey i had a question . i went to teh auto store and i tried buying some royal purple but the guy was saying royal purple is bad for the z or any import car. i just change my oil last month to royal purple in my 370z and im alittle concerned from wat he said. also i recently bought a 06 350z and he was also saying that they have oil consumption problems and may need engine replacement. he was saying those engine had a recall. does anyone know for a fact if wat he told me is true about the engine being recalled and if royal purple is bad for our 370z. he was saying syntetic oil is bad.
