They're baffles for extra oil, you can run without them

extra oil coming from the intake? for when you oil your filter too much?

Actually, those filters are mostly there to act as flame arrestors in the case of a backfire up through the intake manifold and out the throttle plates, so that it doesn't spread through the tubes and ignite your fuely crankcase vapors in the cylinder heads. Secondarily, it also keeps some of those vapors from feeding back into your intake in the case of temporary flow reversals in the PCV system. It's a good idea to have them in place if your PCV system works at all like the stock system. If you hate how they look, Z1 sells silicone replacement tubes which also have internal baffles/filters/whatever and aren't as bulky and ugly: Z1 Silicone Side PCV Breather Hose set for Aftermarket Intakes

Very nice writeup, Wstar!
You menitioned you were dyno testing intake manifolds. I just ordered the Z1 manifold and wondered if this and the Motordyne M370 are comparable. I realize the M370 is alot more expensive.
Thanks
