DIY Rim Paint
13 Attachment(s)
OK after much research and contemplation i got up the nerve to black out my stock rims. If you plan to do it your self i highly recommend these essential items: 320 grit sandpaper block, Acetone, a high quality primer 2cans, and high quality matte black engine paint, and index cards. Also i recommend simple green cleaner and a perfectionist for a girlfriend.. more on that later: Having four jack stands makes everything go so much smoother.. I borrowed two from a friend and bought 2 more for 20.00 with all paint and accessories i paid right around 45.00 for pretty much my dream rims.. The biggest thing is making sure the rims are completely spotless, thats where the girlfriend comes in handy lol! Acetone down the rims sand until white and smooth.. then two coats of primer two coats of paint, one or two coats of clear coat and ur good to go... make sre you let them dry for a full 24 hours before you mount them.. I am so proud that these came out exactly as i say them in my head

Very good DIY
I did this this on my Lancer 2 years ago, and still no chips etc. I might have done overkill by 4 coats of primer then 4 coats of paint :) |
I like those wheels a lot.
Post more pics of GF and I'm sure you'll get more comments. lol |
good job...i like it +1
|

Looks very good. More pics of said GF!

Sorry to be a thread necro, but what steps did you take to make sure it was all even? Aside from a steady hand...

looks very good!! i wish I had the space to do this!

I want to do this, just don't know how it would look on red... Contemplating blacking out the head/tail lights as well. Worried about it chipping off too. I just wouldn't want to put all this time and effort into painting rims just to have the paint chip and look awful.
|
Same here. My pontiac rims were a chore. A pro painter close by is going to do mine if he keeps a tight schedule. REP for you and the pictures + Prep work. Keep going!
|
How long does something like this last?

But what about prepping. Have you sanded both sides of wheels and painted them from inner side? Want to do it in white or titanium gray. |
useing index cards isn't a bad idea.. i just sprayed my winter set white.. took forever to mask off the tires with newspaper. but i also sprayed the inside, it looks more complete. i couldn't get my girl to go near my wheels... she's jealous of the z. but i did talk her into painted my center caps lol. alil arts n crafts time
|
trav - how are the rims holding-up?
|
i havent drove the Z in six months because im deployed but.. they were still in great condition when i left no chips cracks, still lok as good as they did the 1st day..if youtake your time and follow my steps you shouldnt have any problems :)
|
I came across this place on ebay that does a swap for "PVD Chrome" It almost looks black when they do it. Anyone familiar with that? I wonder how durable it is?
|
Those came out good I am goona use you diy to do mine. How did you keep the center cap clean did you pop those out or just tape over them?
|
Do you paint behind/inside the rim also? I'm just curious =o)
|
I've thought about doing this myself but have been too nervous. Lol. Looks great man!
