DIY: Fix for PWJDM Shift Knob Rattle

I know from reading other posts from Z owners with the Password: JDM shift knob there tends to be a rattle when the engine is revving. I did two things that cured it:

Next, get a rubber grommet like this one (cost me less than a dollar at a home improvement store):

Place it on the shift lever (at first I tried it under the shift boot, but that didn't work. But here's a shot of how to remove the trim around the shifter anyway, then the grommet on the shift lever:

Remove the little collar inside the shift knob (I think this is the source of most of the rattling):

Reinstall the knob, and you should be rattle free!

The grommet is rubber, 1" in diameter with a 1/2" hole. It is 1/4" thick. Sorry for leaving this out the first time!

Thanks guys! The rattle is completely gone with these minor changes. I really like this knob for the Z, not only for how it looks. Because the seat is below the shifter height on the Z, having a knob of this type works very well (compared to a larger ball type knob, which I've had on all my cars where the seat height is equal to or higher than the shifter).

I'm about to receive my PWJDM shift knob and was already worrying about this..

Thank you!

i installed my knob while i was doing my audio install and also removed this:

i believe any rattling anyone got before was due to this little washer type thing. ive never heard any rattles, so i dont believe you really need a grommet either..

Good to know, Chops! I like how the grommet makes a tighter seal with the shift boot. But if it doesn't do anything to stop the rattle, then removal of that collar/washer is an easy fix:tup:

Nice DIY.

I did basically the same thing when I got mine this past summer. Instead I just cut up an out an old bicycle tube into a couple pieces about 1/2" long. Haha, didn't have a washer at the time. Anyways it works great!

Very creative! I spent about 20 minutes looking at different washers and grommets a the home improvement store. I'm not complaining though. Stuff like that is like therapy to me.

I just installed my PWJDM shift knob and followed chops advice to remove that silver wahser thingy... No rattle at all.. I bought the red one and love it..

^looks great! If I had a red Z, I would go with the red knob, too. Adds a nice pop to the interior.

So it looks like the collar/washer is the culprit. Only follow my grommet advice if you want to also achieve a tighter seal between the knob and the shifter boot.

Is there a DIY on how to remove the knob, I imagine it just screws off but I don't wanna damage the stock one
