I wired it to reverse to blink and brake to be steady.. but put a switch in-line the brake wire so I can turn it off it I get sick of it... everything works great but the color is a little to bright.. also on one side of the light I can see a smidge of white where I didn't with the stock one.. so I need to take it off again, tint it, and spray inside of the bumper where the light sits... oh well.. but overall I am happy with it...

Also, yesterday and this morning I sprayed PB blaster on my bolts and they came off VERY easily. I'm not sure if mine were just installed without locktite of the pb blaster worked but they came off with zero hassle.

I had a feeling the EVO R lights would be noticeably different if you have painted valence. Do you mind taking some pictures?

So you were able to achieve the look of dim when on and brighten on brake and blink in reverse?

I am interested to know the answer to this as well. I think it would be the perfect setup if it could be dimly lit and get bright when brakes are used while at the same time be configured to yet blink when in reverse.

While I appreciate the technical information that Svre46 provides in his posts, I have zero understanding of current, voltage and amps. (Please don't try to explain..my head will explode)

I do really well with CroMagnon-like directions in all honesty! Draw me a pretty picture with crayons (use the whole box if necessary) and I'll cope well!

I just installed my EVO-R foglight to my black 09 Z...I have a stupid question...After I took off the old fake light & housing (which like everyone else, had to cut off one nut), do I no longer use any part of the old housing that held the fake light? If not, I did it right but is there any possibility of the new foglight getting wet under there? I am worry wart so I had to ask...
I have the fog light attached directly to the bumper with the plate and 4 connectors. I have RED on RED [for being on when the lights are on] and the White on Green [so when I hit the brakes, it flashes]. On a bad note , 2 LED's are bad so I called MotorSports and they are shipping me another one. I have the smoked foglight but not too crazy about it so the replacement, I requested to be red.
Thanks for everyones pics, insructions and tips to make this a job "somewhat" well done! Next, F.I. Exhaust!!!

This light looks pretty cool and appears easy to install. I'm looking to just have it as a 2nd "brake only" light, and flashing when in reverse. So I tap one lead into the brake only lead (color?) and one into the reverse lead. Cool.

But I went to the EVOR website and it won't let me click on this item. I can click on others, like carbon fiber parts, but not this. Is it out of stock or what?

2ndChance 06-03-2011 11:07 PM

I'm doing this mod tomorrow but I dont have the black housing (had my bumper replaced) so I will use some epoxy to glue it from the inside. :ugh2:

Will try this wiring:

-ON with parking light
-Flash with brake light
-Flash with reverse (using a diode to not activate brake light when reverse is on, viceversa)
-Separate switch for constant ON
-Flash when door is open (not sure about this one)

Just got mine installed with the fog light button sitting between the heat seat buttons. The button turns the light on and off and flash when I hit the brake. Looks great.

gurneyeagle 08-20-2011 09:53 PM

Has anyone encountered problems with their annual state inspections, specifically Texas with the EVO light set to flash?

370zproject 08-20-2011 11:28 PM

i want one

This is the same setup that I want on my Z.

Do you know if I can set it up w/ the switch to turn off all the time?

Ideal Setup: Switch overrides all connections, I tell it when I want it on. Fog light only works when I press brakes (flash) and Reverse(flash).

I am assuming this setup would make it possible, basically I do not want it on all the time, only when I really need it, like on foggy days :) and in reverse.

How long does installing this light take ?

NFSZ86 08-28-2011 11:24 PM

Nice install

I'm curiuos how this install worked out for you.

I think it would be the perfect setup if the fog light could be dimly lit and get bright when brakes are used while at the same time be configured to blink when in reverse but nobody has been able to answer the question of HOW. :ugh2:

gurneyeagle 08-29-2011 12:17 PM

Dave:

First off, thanks for posting an incredibly detailed DIY!

I'm a complete newb when it comes to electrical work, but I think I can pull this one off. All I want to do is hook up the EVO light so that it flashes in reverse and stays on constantly with the brakes. By identifying the relevant wires in your write-up, that makes things very easy.

Okay, here are the embarrassing questions - when you tapped into the orange wire, you used a pink connector.

What kind was it?

What wire is it rated for?

Exactly how does it work? Does it clamp on the orange wire and then you just feed the EVO lead into it?

I've seen T-splice connectors; would you recommend one of those?

Again, I've got no experience tapping into a car's electrical system, so these questions probably sound ridiculous.

Thanks in advance.

My EVO-R light has LEDs out. :shakes head: Flash with brake and on when lights are on. Disappointed.... Wonder if there is any sort of warranty on getting a replacement. Ordered trough Welcome To The Z Store! Nissan-Datsun 240Z-260Z-280Z-280ZX-300ZX(Z31/Z32)-350Z-370Z Parts! and the car barely gets any use.

Did you contact the Z Store?

I have been swamped at work since I just got back from vacation but I am going to. I have to dig up my invoice in my car paperwork. Good thing I keep every little receipt. I would hope I can get a replacement considering the price on these things. If not I’ll be going to an OEM fog I suppose.

EVOR 09-08-2011 03:38 AM

yes, we give warranty on them. email me vido of the problem at jay@evo-r.net I'll get you a replacement.

^^Thank You. I will do so this evening when it is a little bit darker out so you can clearly see it.

I think he means if you tap into both parking light and brake light source and feed the EVO lights solid on source, then the fog light will brighten as you hit the brakes......

I'll be installing mine tomorrow, I'll be tying it this way because that's what I was after.

LMBmikeZ 09-16-2011 06:41 PM

Well I have it wired to the parking light and brake light (red & green wire). With the lights off the fog lights up with the brake lights (like a fourth brake light I guess) but with the lights on, I am not noticing the fog light getting any brighter like the brake lights...... I am going to wait an hourish till its darker to see if I can see any difference.

Anyone find a way to make the light brighten??

Yea the way you are doing it will not work since the circuit runs on 12VDC. When you brake you are sending 12VDC to it and when the lights are on you are sending 12VDC. It won’t make a difference if you break with the lights on...either way it is getting 12v so it will just be illuminated and not get any brighter. When you have a dual element light bulb it gets brighter when you brake because of the second element in the bulb. These LEDs you will not get any brighter.

LMBmikeZ 09-17-2011 01:11 PM

Ya I figured it wouldn't..... I did already know about the replacement bulb thing though on the stock light. You need the 7446 bulb and a harness from any brake light at the wreckers that uses that bulb.

I just wanted the all LED look. I guess I still like that it lights up when the lights are off, it comes on like a fourth brake light.

LMBmikeZ 09-17-2011 01:14 PM

Although now I am thinking maybe if I but an inline resistor on the parking light wire that then I could lower what it's getting on that wire down around 6v....... I think I should ask my old man he's an electronics junkie.

KaienZ34 09-17-2011 01:19 PM

I thought someone had done it with a resistor and a relay setup.

LMBmikeZ 09-17-2011 08:01 PM

I tried searching before my instal and didn't find anything but it would be nice if it could work!

gurneyeagle 10-18-2011 08:42 AM

Dave - I'm going to try and pull apart my interior this weekend, and have a question concerning your pictures.

Where exactly is the wiring harness you tapped into and the ground point in the trunk area? Is the picture turned?

From your pictures it looks like the items are on the left side verticle panel in the trunk, but when you look at a distance shot taken of the trunk area, there's nothing on the left side.

Any advice you can provide is most appreciated.

Just an update for you guys. I never received and EVO-R fog replacement under warranty as promised. I was told it would be replaced and Jay is not responding to my PMs or emails. Last I heard it was send me your contact information so he could ship it. I did so...twice. I see he has logged into the forum on multiple occasions. I am going to have to fork out another $100+ to replace it since the car is for sale. I have listed the car with the fog and part of the sale since I expected to have a replacement by now. Would not have been a big deal if no one ever said they would replace it to begin with.....:shakes head:

^^thats really unacceptable. That should be replaced for free. I've been trying to contact Jay and he's not responding to my Pm's either and I'm trying to actually buy one. This is not really helping his reputation with all the delays and days of logging on and not responding.

Has anyone figured out a way to have the brake light flash for a few seconds then turn off? I wouldn't want to be sitting at a traffic light flashing

Just use a 12V time delay relay. Basically when you brake the relay energizes and starts the flash. After a set amount of time (let’s say 5 seconds of being energized from hitting the brake) it disengages causing the flash to stop.

Something like this
DC 12V Delay Timer Time Relay 0~30 Second AH3-3 & Base | eBay

Bonzo 11-11-2011 08:59 AM

You guys are getting all fancy schmancey with your flashing this and flashing that. It makes me dizzy. :wtf2: :roflpuke2:

Yet it seems like I've read about 75,000 threads on this topic, both about the EVO-R light and the OEM light, and no one that I've read has clearly shown or listed how any normal person like me (insert self B.S. here :stirthepot:) wants to hook this up. All I want is a simple 4th brake only light, that works just like the 3rd brake only light in the spoiler. I THINK all I need to do is hook into the green wire on the drivers side taillight wiring, but I'm still not sure. :icon14:

I don't need all that flashy flashy business. Personally I'm not even fond of it. For example, I hate those Mustang tail light turn signals that sweep from center to out.
