DIY: STILLEN 370Z Front Splitter Install
Picked up a STILLEN front splitter and installed it!
HUGE thanks to Josh@STILLEN! Here it is! Needed Tools: Jack & Jack stands Screw Driver Wax and Grease remover Denatured Alcohol Shop towels Recommended Tools: Lift Power Drill A second set of hands to help hold the lip in place http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/b40d008b.jpg Install time: 30 mins (with jack and stands 45mins) Install Difficulty: .5 out of 10 The lips was very well packaged and shipping was super fast! BEFORE PICS: (please excuse my dirty shop :shakes head:) http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/72f02bb1.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/94b084a9.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/48c97ad7.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/96e68e94.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/03ae0b41.jpg Step 1. Jack the front of your car up, or use a car lift (as pictured) http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/88a06251.jpg Step 2. Remove the lip from the package (if you haven't already! :icon17:) http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...Z/224f49c4.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...Z/b4af87f4.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...Z/608e96e5.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...Z/0fead35e.jpg Step 3. Hold the lip up to the bumper and check for fitment issues. (Mine had zero issues so this was pretty easy) http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/77722139.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/19b0c69f.jpg Step 4. Take some shop towels and grease remover and wipe down the lower section of the bumper. **This is very important as the lip has double sided 3M tape. If grease, oil or any other type of surface containment can compromise the tape from sticking.** http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/20dce2fe.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/3a905c95.jpg Step 5. Once you've finished cleaning the lip with grease remover, take more shop towels and clean it again with denatured alcohol. This will remove whatever the grease remover left behind, leaving the surface even cleaner. http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/110a44bd.jpg Step 6. Wipe down the lip and remove and dust or dirt. Then remove the red backing cover off the 3M tape. http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/ffbb5add.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/c737d98f.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/71136338.jpg Step 7. Since the tape is really a one time use thing, you've got to be careful when holding it up. My advice is to hold the lip up to the bumper in the middle and push it as far back as it can go. http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/b749d0e3.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/5f4ed691.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/b749d0e3.jpg Then snap the sides of the lip over the bottom edge of the bumper fascia. Step 8. Once the lip is secured to the bumper with tape, it's time to use the supplied self taping screws to the underside for added strength. I put 2 in the sides, and the rest evenly throughout the front. http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/a0f6a90e.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/403e8361.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/4d24891c.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/c7722f56.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/467140e1.jpg Step 9. Lower the car and wipe off any dirt or hand prints and enjoy! After pictures: http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/03159a97.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/512836a4.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/e88dd308.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/b28e60d8.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/288f6db9.jpg Daylight pictures: http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/42ff1190.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/7ff83241.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/87168ad7.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/a94a7b8c.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/5f0b2ea1.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/9690bed7.jpg http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...r/7d2d3311.jpg Conclusions: I love this lip. I've been looking for lips for a long time and I really haven't found any that I really liked. I stumbled across the STILLEN lip on their site and had to have it, and I'm SUPER impressed with how well it fits. It's near OEM quality. For the price and quality, you can't beat it! Check out STILLEN page for ordering and pricing info! Thanks for checking this out, and if you've found it helpful, give me rep! :hello: -David **EDIT** 10/2/11 Updated picture of the lip color matched http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f3...Z/41dcd337.jpg |
Nice guide :)
Did you drill a pilot hole for the screws or just wind them in? I think the only thing I might change is to use some black screws or different fixings where you can see them in the wheel arch. I'd like to see one on a yellow 370 :) |

I used a blotch of black touch up paint and dabbed the side screws with it so they are less noticeable. Alternatively, you could use a standard automotive clip, one you'd find in the misc hardware section of your local auto parts store. For those, you would need to drill a pilot hole. |
Good answers :)

Great DiY again! Thanks for taking the time to do this. It came out really nice.
I wonder why you just didn't remove the original chin spoiler? Nonetheless it came out nice. A rep to you Sir :tiphat: |
Superb! Thanks so much for the DIY!
Only thing I would recommend is instead of removing all of the 3M backing in one shot.. just start each side with a couple of inches, letting the red backing come out the front, so as you place the part, you can just pull on the backing with the part attached. Gives you some flexibility instead of the "omg i have one chance".. LOL Looks fantastic! |

Good call Josh, that's great advice. I was lucky enough to put it one right with the first time. haha
|
Great job snapping so many pictures at all the important angles, very simple and straightforward DIY.
Josh: is it possible to swing by your office and see what it looks like in person before deciding? |

Maybe you'll be tempted to just leave with it.. :stirthepot: |

Are the two screws in the wheel well required? I know you mentioned the possibility of using a clip but are they needed in that spot or did you just add them for extra strength?
|
Only issue i had with my install was that the screws provided didn't quite grab enough... so i went ahead and just bought some longer/thicker ones and now no issues I love this lip :) Thanks Stillen!

Wow very nice. If I ever get tired of my current lip, this will def be my next choice

It wasn't going anywhere before.. but if anything, the sides won't squirm around and scuff up my paint. |
I noticed the post was deleted where RC asking for a price and then josh replying with you will have a pm on your price.
Was that price only for RCZ? Has he became the unofficial sponsor/spokes person for stillen. Just wondering seems shady both post were deleted. Frank |
Um.. me too?
And today is Black Friday pricing on all urethane items.. so if you're considering it.. your timing is good.. :) |
Josh how about an updat on the G37 site on the engine detonating thread.
|
Very nice DIY.

And yes, no idea why anything was removed, but I do see what you're saying. New to me. |
looks really nice.
|
That's weird, I guess it was the wrong place to add and it just cluttered the thread so I can understand if it was deemed unnecessary and erased.
Either that...or its all a big conspiracy to give me better prices.... I got my splitter though and will be installing it possibly later today. |
I know I'm digging up an old thread, but with this lip/splitter would it be ok to remove the little spoiler that is included with the sport package? Seems to me that it will pretty much lose all functionality with this in place.
|
I just bought the Stillen Front Splitter and I removed the front bumper to install it. I removed the front bumper so I can install it with a screw and a nut inside the bumper. If you install it with the self tapping screws that came with the kit, after a while the lip will fly off. The shear wind and vibration will loosen the crappy screws and before you know it, you will not have a lip anymore. This method of install was recommended by at least 3 body shops that I went to. They were all quoting me about 200 for the install but I decided to do it myself and save me the $ ;) Happy with the results
|
How much lower does the splitter sit than the stock set-up? Doesn't look like a whole bunch?

so the screws that came with the splitter wont work. Hmm, looks like i'll have to run to lowes or home depot to get some larger screws. Pretty straight forward install otherwise. +1 to the OP. :tiphat:

I just saw that they offer additional "turn buckles" to help support the splitter with their kits now....has anyone bought this splitter recently and installed these? Would be interested in seeing pics. |
Love my stillen lip one of the best if not the best investment made on the Z. :yum:

Got this lip in the other day.. This thread helps a lot, thanks!

hey guys, I'm attempting to install my stillen splitter and I ran into huge issues. It's extremely hard to fit into place. I have yet to even get it in place with the tape alone. (Most tape doesnt even make contact.) Seems about a 1/2" off either direction. I always have a gap in the "center inside corners". I tried lining up the center first then pulling the ends on and it doesn't work. The center pops off. Then I tried hooking the sides first and pulling the middle on. Still no luck. The amount of tension required to try and get the lip in place is ridiculous. :shakes head: I can't pull it into place at all no matter what I do. Has anyone else had trouble with it? I'm getting extremely annoyed, not to mention I scratched up my paint the process  Ughhh
|
^^ **edit*** ^^
I might have figured out my issue. I put a metal rod/brace in the front edge of the lip ahead to time to prevent the lip from the inevitable "sag" issue... and it might be what's causing my issue now. Not sure how much flex the lip needs to install, but it seemed pretty rigid from the get go. |
Are you all removing the factory diffuser when installing the stillen lip? Wasn't sure if it made it look funny or not leaving it on.
