Request: Homelink mirror install
Would like to see a good write-up on this. I'm really gonna miss the Homelink mirror that's currently on my 350Z Enthusiast but won't be on my 370Z base. I'm very paranoid when it comes to any sort of electrical work so I'd love to see someone do it and take pics. Thanks!

^ 1+.
I forgot how helpful the autodim function was on my Altima. I'd tried to remove the stock mirror on the Z yesterday but no luck. It'd be nice if someone could do a step-by-step of the removal and wiring. I dunno, shouldn't this be a standard function on a 30+ grand car? Many thanks in advance. :tiphat: |
Here you go.
350Z EC Mirror Installation Instructions (page 1 of 4) Look at the buttom there are total of 4 pages! |

hahaha..Just do it! Yea I know what you mean...there are something I much rather see more details pictures of before I atemp to do them myself.

I just installed mine, took about 20 minutes.
Those instructions are for the 350Z and are what come in the box with the new mirror. They are spot on for the 370, except for the wire locations. The green ignition wire is in the top fuse junction and the red battery wire is in the bottom one, verified with a meter before the install. Here is a pic of which wires you need, other than that, its just as the instructions say. http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/3360/dsc05043m.jpg |
+ 1. Thanks Mike. Your instructions helped me out. Here's a pic of the finished product.

glad to help! I've never trusted those little clip on wire taps before, but since it was so tight, I decided to give them a try and they actually worked pretty well.

Slowly getting all the touring model goodies separately :rofl2:
Now if only the aluminum trimmed pedals were available..:stirthepot: |
So where did you buy it?

Bump" I am looking to do this one. Anyone have pics on how the wires are run? Directions are kinda confusing as to what to take off. Just did the kick plates from the DIT section and I got to say, this site is AWESOME!
|
I didn't take any picts, but I ran the cord in the ceiling, then under the driver side A-pillar at the very top, crossed over to the door side of the A-pillar, then temporarily removed the door opening weather seal and placed the cord inside the A-pillar, down to the kickplate area.
I did not have to remove anything on the ceiling and also did not need to remove the A-pillar cover itself or the cover under the steering wheel. I just pushed the cord into the ceiling and A-pillar at the top. It helps to use a squeegee unless you go some long fingernails. Hope that makes sense... :) |
OH, OK. Yeah I can follow that. I am buying this sometime this comming week. Can't wait

Installed... have some doubts
Hi, I did the install by myself and had no major issues, ran through the ceiling edge and then pulled the weather strip to insert the cabling into the inner channel. Removed side sills and fuse box cover. (didnt have to remove A pilar cover)
however I noticed when I turn off the car, the mirror doesn't automatically turn off. Is this particular behavior normal in this car?, I did the cabling as suggested in the manual and explained on the pictures (green cable top connector {ignition} and red cable button connector{Battery}). |
No you did the cabling correctly.
It's "always on" so that the compass memory does not get reset everytime you turn off your ignition/accessory power source; also useful for keeping your home-link memory settings as well The mirror will not kill your battery. It takes very very little power. |

The auto dim mirror should turn off when the car is turned off, however, the homelink is always on! Sounds like you should reverse the ignition/battery connections. |
yah, i think your accessory is hooked up to the constant. as conchz said above, you need to switch those around.
the auto dim and compass should shut off when the engine is off. the homelink will still be active since it's hooked to constant. |

Now i realize the homelink function powers up from the battery and the auto-dim+Compass use the ignition power... Thanks for the help!. I didnt get the Homelink programming instructions on my kit; only compass and autodim information was included. Here are the programming steps taken from HomeLink
the programmed HomeLink button. Activation will now occur. For convenience, the gate operator handheld transmitter may also be used at any time. |
HOMELINK programming RANT...
OK i had the instructions manual and it's either extremely vague or i'm hitting a language barrier.
Witch buttons does it mean to HOLD when it says "Hold the two outer homelink buttons" ; i assumed if you consider the buttons labeled (homelink . , homelink .. and homelink ...) the center then the (homelink .) and (homelink ...) are the two outer buttons. but if you consider your mirror assembly, then the (homelink .) and homelink ..) are the two outter buttons. However if they consider the whole mirror buttom assembly, including compass and autodim, then the compass and homelink. are the two outter buttons.... Eitherway I tried holding 25seconds+ onto each of the "two outer buttons" combinations and the mirror LED (the only LED i see on the mirror assembly) never ever blinks. no signs of anything. that was with the car OFF, On, ignition, etc. The instructions don't specify witch power state the car should be in, it only says to get the car to ON position after you hold witch ever button combination first.... So incredibly vague. Either i'm not doing it right or my unit is DOA... i havent for a second seen a response from the buttons to the LED on the mirrror. so incredibly frustrating pieze of equipment. can Someone ring in on witch specific buttons to hold, witch led should blink if it and witch power state. I'm very technically inclined and it just doesnt make sense to me. ---auto-dim and compass functions work. |
if your homelink is brand new you dont need to do that step. it's just to clear any previous memory in there.

mine never blinks. A friend of mine has a similar mirror on his hyundai and he tells me his blinks green/red when the buttons are pressed. |
yah, mine worked the way the instructions said. was easy boom boom boom and done in like 2min. then drove it around a little and the compass calibrated itself.

Compass works fine. Autodim works fine. |

The ground I tapped into was down into the kick panel and is very obvious. Instead of the Green 12V+ Ignition wire you used, however, I used an Orange 12V+ Accessory wire found in the middle plug. There's a larger gauge Orange wire in the upper plug, don't use that one. I didn't meter it to know what it does, so don't take the risk. |
