Default DIY 350zHR Intake Swap

Ok here I am after reading about the M370 from Motordyne
I decided to try myself at doing something similar and see if something else could provide about the same result or better .

so I began looking for the whole Intake and TB assembly used which I found a great deal .

I took a look at the lower spacer that Nissan glue/fit under the intake and found out there was on 3 of exit hole a big restricting lip from not fitting the spacer and the intake together.
I began to sand it and make a smooth joint
it took about 90 Min's doing them all 6

Picture below is during the sanding

Then after I got my eyes on some picture provided in the Motordyne thread
I had a pretty good idea where the hole was
it took about 50-60mins doing the 4 holes with a drill and Dremel

unfortunately the 4th hole was a bit complicated to do since from the picture that I took from the Motordyne thread , the picture was blurry and not clear .
But I was certain where the hole was .I decided to go ahead and do it anyway

===================================

Tonight , I went at the car club on base (military) and proceed to a fit test , I knew I wouldn't be dead on about those hole , I was right.
No big deal just some details

On the Left = 350z HR Intake & on the Right = 370z Intake

Some more grinding with a Dremel will be needed at the top of the Intake

this one is Perfect

showing the back of the Intake

the most feared hole
the new hole I made is right on , but at an angle , which mean I will have
to grind the top of the intake a little bit and a longer bolt to help with the fitting , no big deal.

a closer look of the lower intake manifold

the 4th hole that I'm having some difficulty is about 13/32 inch closer to the front of the car .
the other possibility was to drill & tap a new hole where the OEM hole in the 350zHR intake would be on the lower manifold
which is shown on this picture

================================

I am not finish and I'm just doing it during my free time and when I have nothing to do.

the reason to have got both the intake manifold and 2x Throttle body is because I'm going to have both TB bored to 62.5mm and some other trick
then a custom CAI and a bigger MAF section.

=============================
Update 3 Nov 2010

well tonight Ive been doing some work on the intake,
more importantly was to smooth down the runners after I sanded the sharp edge that was originally there

the finish is quite smooth ! which might not be noticed on this picture

then the second work on the intake was to sand and smooth down the entry where the Throttle body bolt on.
there is some restricting edge that can be seen on this picture
sorry its a Cell picture

the smooth process

then last work was to open up the 4 holes that has been worked on previously and after the *test fit* from 2 week ago
hole # 1

hole # 2

hole # 3

hole # 4 , this is the one that I'm having some doubt , I'm pretty sure I will have to adjust the alignment to have the bolt in correctly
I'm suppose to be testing it again tomorrow if nothing change

oh and by the way , before someone ask about how I will replace the steel sleeve insert that I had to remove .

Don't worry about this because the solution to this problem is soo easy and not complicated,
Stay around and you will know !

you should probably read this before
The Motordyne M370 Intake Manifold

What Ive been doing on my own is just something to save some money , get hand on experience , learning , challenging , trying to get better result !

the gain is mostly just in the mid-range and not really any gain past 7000rpm
thats not a big deal because I am mostly between 4000-7000 at the track anyway and the gain range from 0+15hp/tq from the M370 (Motordyne)

I'm only posting this here to show other peoples that are willing to take the same challenge as me , winter is coming quickly someone might be interested into a DIY !!

Default Update 4 Nov

As planned, I went back at the car club to work on the intake *Test fit # 2*

3 of the 4 holes are completed and ready for the next step .
My guess on the dreaded hole was confirmed again , it just need a little more work to be able to install the long screw (M8x1,25), as for the 3 other one , they will still use the OEM screw (10mm socket head)

I have done no more than 6 hours total on this DIY
it take about 50 mins to swap the intake manifold which was done twice.

Hole #1

Hole #2

Hole #3

Hole #4
