DIY: Adding In-Cabin air filter to the 370Z
9 Attachment(s)
Ok here is what to do if you want clean air inside your Z.
Bought the in cabin filter at Autozone for the Maxima seems like a lot of the Nissan's use the same filter. 1.About 6 screws to take glove box out then pull hard. 2.Open the vent door be careful the tab on the left on trap door breaks easy. 3.Insert filter and reassemble had to use a penny to hold left side tab broke. 4.Breathe the Clean Air. 5.Crank up the Red Hot Chili Peppers Rep points needed: |
In which picture/part did you have to use a penny?
|
It does not show it but in the first pic there is a tab on the left opposite of the clip and it is just a flat piece of plastic and it broke anything flat will work just to keep it tight against the flap if your careful taking it off should not break.
Not sure if I have the airflow direction right? looks right to me.Have a magnet handy or a magnetized screwdriver some of the screws will fall behind the glove box. |
Sounds good, thank you.
|
good writeup
rep points for going Prem so early, not for the DIY lol |
Nice Job!
|
Nice write up! caneman88
|
Nice! Thanks! Nissan sure is cheap. How hard would it be to pop one in there on the assembly line. Sheesh.

Maybe the label part of the filter goes on the side that is not visiable when it is installed mine was a little snug but got it to fit.

First off, i would like to thank you for pioneering this DIY, but I hope you don't mind if i expand a little more and make corrections on your DIY.
Do this at your own risk, I'm not responsible if you break something using this easier modified directions. First off. there are 7 screws total. Screw #6 is sort of a hidden screw. Remove screw 1 -> 4. if you have a super long screw driver then remove 5 -> 7 also, if not then read next step. http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/3271/dsc01346ji.jpghttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Jj...9=w816-h612-no http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/2781/dsc01349jq.jpghttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Hm...t=w816-h612-no http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/1042/dsc01348g.jpghttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/XO..._=w816-h612-no http://imageshack.us/a/img194/2325/dsc01350da.jpghttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/VF...E=w816-h612-no Next pull off the glove box. Grab the 2 spots circled in red and pull upwards. This allows you VERY easy access to screws 5 -> 7 as well as a much easier time removing the panel. This step is OPTIONAL, but as i mentioned, it gives you easy access to screws 5 -> 7 and it also gives you a spot to grab panel to pull it off. To put the glove box back, just line up the hinge and pop it back in. http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/1238/dsc01351.jpghttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ZZ...E=w816-h612-no http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/1575/dsc01352m.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/wp...q=w816-h612-no Next GENTLY pull off the panel starting from the RIGHT side first. You don't wanna damage that extension area on the right side by pulling too hard on the left. Insert finger where the arrows are and grab the bottom with your other hand and pull. Do the same on the other side. Removing the glove box lanyard is optional (actually, mines popped off as i was figuring how to put the glove box back in after accidentally removing it) but it gives you more space to work with. Remember, pull GENTLY, you shouldn't have to pull hard after removing the hidden screw, #6. http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/8648/dsc01353mv.jpghttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/gW...u=w816-h612-no The rest you can follow caneman88's to install/replace the filter. I just have one thing that I found might be useful and that is to cut 4 slots on the bottom of the filter wall so that you can close the vent door without smashing the filter. You'll know what i mean when you take off the vent door. Just line up the slots with the 4 things on the door and make like a 1/4" -> 1/2" cut. See pic for approx locations, measure the actual location with the vent door. http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/972/img4999.jpghttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/VW...g=w782-h587-no Yes the arrow on the filter points down. Air is sucked from the top and down into the circular thing. I assume you guys know how to reverse the directions to put everything back. Rep points much appreciated if you found this addition helpful  *edit* Fixed broken image. Let me know if the links are broken and I'll upload it again. |
How long do these filters usually last?
|
I'll stick to using my God-given nose hairs...they are a heckuva alot cheaper and don't have to ever be replaced...just blown them out once or twice a day.....

what type
I notice which one you put in but others have said to use a CAF1766
filter. Is there a better one than an other? Do they all fit the same, or have less constricted air flow than another? |
I am not sure if I am paranoid but I could not figure out if CAF1792 would be the correct one because it might be too thick and too long.
In test fitting, there is a vent door that I believe will need to open and the filter may prevent it from swinging open. What I need to find out is if this door swings upwards or downwards. I am out of time today so I apologize for leaving everyone hanging. Btw thanks for the writeup. |
Looks just like my G sedan. :) shouldn't take more than 15 minutes to get it done. One thing tho that you should definitely have a philips head screw driver that's at least 6-8" long. Makes things much easier. ;)
|
Awesome.
Has anyone thought of finding a charcoal type filter in there (if they exist)? I hate it when I roll by a skunk or other dead animal, and it wafts it's way in, and won't leave. |
I don't know if they fit but Nissan makes the charcoal filter for the Gs. I have them and I have been using this for about past 30k miles. You may want to try them.

STP: CAF1766 Purolator: C35479 WIX: 24883 Fram: CF10157 No need to notch the filter. The tapered posts on the door hold the filter up and in place away from the fan below. This is the one meant to go in there... This is a Lexus/Toyota equivalent P/N Toyota 87139-32010 Apparently several Manuf. use the same air handling unit. Fitment: Lexus ES330 v6 3.3l 2004-2005, RX400 Hybrid 2006-2009, Toyota Avalon V6 3.0L 2002-2004, Camry V6 2002-2005 & 4Cyl 2006, Highlander V6 3.3L 2004-2007 & Hybrid V6 2006-2007, Sienna V6 3.3L 2004-2006, Solara 2003-2006 http://images50.fotki.com/v1523/phot...MG_2286-vi.jpg |
I used the Purolator C35479 and it fit fine. The tabs on the plastic door held the filter up and flat so that it was not directly contacting the fan housing, but still filtering all of the passing air.
Someone asked whether the air filter would interfere with doors / panels inside the housing. I checked by turning on the car, and switching from outside air to recirculating air. The Purolator C35479 does not interfere with the operation of the venting in any way. Kevin |
The Fram CF10157 is a charcoal type, Seems to fit:tiphat:.
|
Before I ask this, let me state that I know this is very dependent on where a person lives. I understand that dirtier air (such as the dirty desert air where I live) will fill a filter faster than say, southern Florida.
That being said, how long (or how many miles) do people get out of cabin filters? |
Thanks Caneman88, G96818 and ModShack, I was able to install the cabin filter (Purolator C35479) with ease using your photo's as a guide.
Took me all of 10 minutes to install the filter and re-assemble the glovebox. |
nice write up. tag for later.

What are the dimensions of the CF10157 compared to the non-charcoal type? If they are the same, I would rather buy the charcoal. This is a Frame brand, correct? Thanks. |
i have the fram and it's a charcoal filter. there's no arrows for air flow direction.... anyone know if the dark side is the in and lighter color side is the out? or is it the other way around?
im putting it in now and scratching my head... thanks. |

There is no way you can change the cabin filter from underneath the car. I don't know what Jiffy Lube is doing but they're not changing your cabin filter (if this is a 370z).
|
I installed the Purolator C35479 filter today. It took me a bit more than 10 mins since I was afraid of breaking something but putting everything back was much faster. Thanks for the DIY and + rep all around. :icon17:
|
I did this with a fram filter from Amazon, around $13 bucks. Install wasnt hard, but certainly wasnt simple as none of the parts look like they want to come off. Thank you for the instructions!
|
Thank you for the DIY on this. I did mine the other weekend and it went well... except I too broke the tab on the door, and had to use the penny trick to close it.
Does anyone know the part number for that plastic cabin air filter door? I searched around on Courtesy Parts, and was not able to find that specific part. Any help would be appreciated. The broken door is nagging the back of my mind..... |
I am pretty sure the 2010 Z comes with the filter already installed. NO one has answered why the 2009 didnt?
