Easiest mod ever
I just hardwired my passport 8500i X50 with a Safe-n-Sound Mirror Stealth Cord:
Escort Stealth Mirror Cord - "Be Safe with Safe-N-Sound1.com" It plugs into the power plug for the rearview mirror and takes all of about 7 minutes to complete. It's so easy, a DIY writeup would just be silly. The cord cost me under $10 shipped and got to me within two days via USPS. Couldn't be happier.

This can be done for about about $2-5 dollars, assuming you have a soldering iron and solder.

The wires in the mirror were different on my Z. I'm too lazy to go outside and check, but if anyone needs to know which wire to connect to I will go check. |

That is the cheapest price I have seen so far.
I just bought mine at invisicord for $15.25 last night. Too bad this website was down yesterday. Otherwise, I would have seen this post. |

One advantage to the one I ordered is the fuse included in the power line. I've burned out a Passport 8500 before with a hardwired cord that shorted. This fuse might help avoid that. Maybe.

I don't think this would work for a base model would it?

Your mirror needs power to it in order to tap into the connector there. So if you don't have a Homelink mirror, you just need to run the wire thru the headliner down to your fusebox.

Wishful thinking on my part, I was hoping there would be wiring there even if there wasn't a homelink mirror. Oh well.

Recently purchased the stealth cord from Safe-N-Sound1.com, rather than taking the time to go gather parts & make one...appreciate the info.
As for mounts, I came across a post on 350zmotoring.com where a guy Mike3348 makes mounts ( mike3348@roadrunner.com ): The Escort/Bel mounts are $23.00 ea and the Valentine V1 mounts are $33.00 ea. both shipped USPS in the US. This is the least expensive solid mount I've found & is essentially the same basic design as found on Mirror Radar Mount for the Escort or Beltronics Radar Detector. It fits my Bel mount & 370z mirror perfectly. I recommend this approach for anyone else looking to get the detector off suction cups on the windshield in an easy to do manner.
